The concept of "inside/outside" is not limited to avant-garde and experimental jazz; in can also be found in everything from screamo (also known as post-hardcore or melodic hardcore) to melodic death metal and symphonic black metal. But avant-garde jazz musicians, more than anyone, have perfected that integration of the sane and the insane -- that ability to combine the extreme with the not-so-extreme and make it all come together in a logical, coherent fashion. Recorded in December 2002, Waltz Again is a rewarding example of David Murray's ability to skillfully pull together the inside and the outside. This post-bop/avant-garde date (which finds the veteran tenor man joined by a rhythm section as well as ten string players) is many different things. There are moments of abstraction -- moments when Murray's playing is dissonant, cerebral, difficult, and angular. But there are other times when Murray (who was 47 when Waltz Again was recorded) is relatively accessible and quite melodic; Waltz Again sometimes recalls the lyrical side of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, and there are hints of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn at times. Waltz Again has its share of avant-garde appeal, but some parts of this 63-minute CD are peaceful, tranquil, and downright comforting -- even lush on occasion. And lush is certainly doable when you have ten string players on hand. There are many worthwhile albums in Murray's sizable catalog, and Waltz Again is likely to go down in history as one of his strongest recordings of the 2000s. ~ Alex Henderson

This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."

Saxophonist David Murray continues his cross genre initiatives on this undeniably exciting, 2003 release Now Is Another Time. With this effort, the artist enlists his longtime running mates, trumpeter Hugh Ragin and baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett to complement a huge cast of Cuban musicians. This large ensemble Latin jazz extravaganza packs a mighty blow, from beginning to end. Here, the band churns out radiant, multi-layered horn arrangements atop the Cuban masters' sweltering percussion grooves and the soloists' blaring exchanges. They integrate punctual choruses into the grand mix, to coincide with the band's bold, brassy sound and thrusting impetus. Furthermore, Murray is in top form, evidenced by his climactically driven soloing endeavors -- where he peaks within the upper registers -- via an unrelenting pace. It's all about perpetual motion topped off with a festive sentiment, marked by oscillating Afro-Cuban grooves and a few poignant interludes here and there. Since making a middle-of-life comeback in the 1990s, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Charles Lloyd has continually issued fascinating recordings. While some of them contain missteps, it's not for lack of ambition. For one of jazz's elder statesmen, Lloyd pushes his envelope of ideas about improvisation, rhythm and harmony, often to the breaking point. He is a player who sets sometimes impossibly high goals for himself, but in so doing, gives listeners something to really hold on to when encountering one of his albums or seeing him live. Jumping the Creek, which continues his association with ECM Records, is another compelling affair. The band -- pianist Geri Allen, bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Eric Harland -- is simply outstanding. Allen, particularly, hasn't shined on a record like this thus far this decade. Lloyd's compositional ideas here come from rhythmic phrases, small harmonic vamps and emotional thematics. Lloyd engages his quartet in various ways, sometimes in duets, sometimes trios, sometimes as a full band, often during the same composition.
