David Murray: David Murray (tenor saxophone); Jaribu Shahid (double bass); Hamid Drake, Lafayette Gilchrist. Personnel: Lafayette Gilchrist (piano); Hamid Drake (drums). Audio Mixer: Dave Darlington. Liner Note Author: Kevin Le Gendre. Recording information: 12/2002. The concept of "inside/outside" is not limited to avant-garde and experimental jazz; in can also be found in everything from screamo (also known as post-hardcore or melodic hardcore) to melodic death metal and symphonic black metal. But avant-garde jazz musicians, more than anyone, have perfected that integration of the sane and the insane -- that ability to combine the extreme with the not-so-extreme and make it all come together in a logical, coherent fashion. Recorded in December 2002, Waltz Again is a rewarding example of David Murray's ability to skillfully pull together the inside and the outside. This post-bop/avant-garde date (which finds the veteran tenor man joined by a rhythm section as well as ten string players) is many different things. There are moments of abstraction -- moments when Murray's playing is dissonant, cerebral, difficult, and angular. But there are other times when Murray (who was 47 when Waltz Again was recorded) is relatively accessible and quite melodic; Waltz Again sometimes recalls the lyrical side of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders, and there are hints of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn at times. Waltz Again has its share of avant-garde appeal, but some parts of this 63-minute CD are peaceful, tranquil, and downright comforting -- even lush on occasion. And lush is certainly doable when you have ten string players on hand. There are many worthwhile albums in Murray's sizable catalog, and Waltz Again is likely to go down in history as one of his strongest recordings of the 2000s. ~ Alex HendersonJazzTimes (p.99) - "Murray has mellowed. His more extreme devices are now colorful details within somewhat kinder, gentler musical designs." David Murray Waltz Again Songs Waltz Again Review

Waltz Again
$6.39 The Corrs: Jim Corr (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Sharon Corr (vocals, violin); Andrea Corr (vocals, tin whistle); Caroline Corr (vocals, drums, bodhran, percussion). Recorded at Ardmore Studios in Dublin, Ireland in January 2002. You knew the Corrs had made it when they played the final JFK Awards ceremony of the Clinton administration. Playing it would have been achievement enough, but their status as a happening thing was cemented at the end of the ceremony, during the encores, when everybody was taking their final bows. Bill moseyed up over to Andrea, put his arm around her, and when she was looking away, sized her up -- at precisely the same moment Chuck Berry was checking her out. If that doesn't mean that you've broken America, entering its pop culture, I don't know what does, expect for maybe a VH1-endorsed piece of product like Live in Dublin. Lo and behold, that's exactly what the Corrs received in the spring of 2002, a year and a half after "In Blue" and its accompanying single "Breathless" broke down the doors in America for the U.S. Only two songs on this set list are shared with In Blue, but that doesn't mean that the group returns to their slightly more traditional Celtic roots on the remainder of the songs. Sure, ...

| | Charles Lloyd Jumping The Creek CD (2005)
Waltz Again
$14.65 Personnel: Charles Lloyd (alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); Charles Lloyd (tarogato); Geri Allen (piano); Robert Hurst (double bass); Eric Harland (drums, percussion). Audio Mixers: Talley Sherwood; Dominic Camardella. Liner Note Author: Stanley Crouch. Recording information: Cello Studios, Los Angeles, CA (01/2004). Photographer: Dorothy Darr. Since making a middle-of-life comeback in the 1990s, saxophonist, composer, and bandleader Charles Lloyd has continually issued fascinating recordings. While some of them contain missteps, it's not for lack of ambition. For one of jazz's elder statesmen, Lloyd pushes his envelope of ideas about improvisation, rhythm and harmony, often to the breaking point. He is a player who sets sometimes impossibly high goals for himself, but in so doing, gives listeners something to really hold on to when encountering one of his albums or seeing him live. Jumping the Creek, which continues his association with ECM Records, is another compelling affair. The band -- pianist Geri Allen, ...
| | Sonny Rollins Without A Song (The 9/11 Concert) CD (2005)
Waltz Again
$9.59 Personnel: Sonny Rollins (tenor saxophone); Sonny Rollins; Clifton Anderson (trombone); Stephen Scott (piano, kalimba); Bob Cranshaw (electric bass, bass guitar); Perry Wilson (drums); Kimati Dinizulu (percussion). Audio Remixer: Richard Corsello. Liner Note Author: Bob Blumenthal. Recording information: Berklee Performance Center, Boston, MA (09/15/2001). Editor: Richard Corsello. Photographers: Ken Franckling; John Abbott . When the disasters on 9/11 occurred, the great tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins was in his New York apartment, only blocks away from the World Trade Center. He survived a night without electricity and was of course deeply affected by the catastrophe. At the urging of his wife and manager, Lucille, he fulfilled an engagement to play in Boston four days later, and the concert recording was released four years later. Rollins is quite emotional in his playing and can be heard throughout in peak creative form. While many of his detractors feel that his studio recordings since the 1970s have not had the excitement of his live ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Waltz Again
$12.89 Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); John Coltrane (tenor saxophone); Ahmed Abdul-Malik (bass instrument); Shadow Wilson (drums). Liner Note Authors: Larry Appelbaum; Robin D.G. Kelley; Ira Gitler; Lewis Porter; Amiri Baraka; Stanley Crouch; Ashley Kahn. Recording information: Carnegie Hall, New York, NY (11/29/1957). Larry Appelbaum, the recording lab supervisor at the Library of Congress, came across this tape by accident while transferring the library's tape archive to digital. What a find. Forget the Five Spot recording that sounds like it was recorded inside of a tunnel from the far end. The sound here is wonderfully present and contemporary. More importantly, this band -- which also included drummer Shadow Wilson and bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik -- had it right on November 29, 1957, at Carnegie Hall. The John Coltrane on this date is far more assured than he had been four months earlier on the Five Spot date and on the initial Prestige side Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane. He'd been with Monk for four months and had absorbed his complex, multivalent musical system completely. It's clear from the opening track, "Monk's ...
