Danny Kaye stars. A biopic about the great jazz musician "Red" Nichols, featuring more than 20 toe-tapping tunes. The musical biopic of jazz great Red Nichols features a healthy dose of melodrama along with the melodies. As the famed Dixieland cornetist, he runs into opposition to his sound, but breaks through to success. He marries a warm, patient woman (Bel Geddes) and even finds time to raise a family. Then tragedy strikes when their daughter contracts polio. The jazzman puts down his horn to stand by her. Among the musical cameos is a hot turn by Armstrong in a duet with Kaye. Sylvia Fine, who was Danny Kaye's wife, served as associate producer for "The Five Pennies," and as song composer for three tunes in the film. Several jazz greats appear in this film either as themselves, such as Louis Armstrong, or as other legends of the era.
Loring "Red" Nichols performed Danny Kaye's instrumentals for the film.
Photographer Hoynigen-Huene was color coordinator for this film. Color by Technicolor.

This brought back fond memories and also confirmed what a brilliant film this is for then and for now, - in fact I now have a higher opinion of it.

Besides Danny Kayes comedy this has Louie Armstrong and the trumpet is the real Red Nicholes.
Lots of good music along with a "based on a true story" script.

Oldie but a goodie
This is a masterpiece! I have seen this movie at least 10 times but owning it on DVD is great. The music, the acting, the story line are all brilliant. This is Danny Kaye at his very very best. If you love Jazz, romance and love to cry then this one is for you.

I remember my mother & I sitting watching this as a little kid and this movie has become to hold a special place in my heart. I am now 46 years old and still remeber this movie as if I had watched it yesterday, I have looked all over for this movie but could never find it.I will be adding it to my collection and loving every time I watch it like it was my first time seeing it.With fondest memories of my mother.

the five pennies has got to be one of danny kayes best films, for once he is acting a serious part not like his other films were he is playing comedy,
if anyone is a danny kaye fan then this is a must see film.
