With only seven Bob Dylan covers (three are reprised as "radio edits," another is repeated as an "alternative mix"), and a closing original tune, this is more an EP than a full-length album. Regardless, Dave's True Story does right by Dylan, covering songs from the early part of his career, with two coming from Blood on the Tracks and two from Blonde on Blonde. Reinterpreting them in the DTS' lounge-core, tropicalia fashion works surprisingly well for the most part, emphasizing Dylan's edgy lyrics as singer Kelly Flint brings her languid, torchy sensuality to the mix. Hardcore Dylan fans might find these versions on the smooth side, but the arrangements, while easy-going, are not necessarily easy listening. Stripped down to just stand-up bass, brushed drums, predominantly unplugged guitars, and just a hint of organ emphasizes the unique chord changes that mark the best of Dylan's work. Unearthing New Morning's jazzy "If Dogs Run Free," with talk and sung vocals from David Cantor as Flint scats behind him, is a terrific and unexpected find. "It's All Over Now Baby Blue" is the only track here that doesn't translate as well to the DTS style, since the words are too cutting to be sung in such a relaxed fashion. Additionally, Flint changes notes from the original when she sings "blue" in the chorus, which is jarring. The second "alternative" stab at "You're a Big Girl Now" features reverbed, noir surf guitar, infusing a moody and dynamic twist to the song. "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" plays closest to the original, but Flint's direct approach misses Dylan's sly, understated humor. The lone new composition, "Blood and Bone," although a good-enough DTS track, doesn't belong here musically, and one wonders why the band could not have worked up a few more Dylan tunes to flesh out this otherwise excellent project. ~ Hal Horowitz
This 7-song Bob Dylan cover EP could be subtitled "DTS Does Dylan." This project had its genesis several months ago, when Dave's True Story was invited to play the annual DylanFest at a winery in upstate N.Y. The assignment was simple - the repertoire muDirty Linen (p.86) - "[The band] covers 'Just Like a Woman' and 'Simple Twist of Fate' with aplomb..." | | Aretha Franklin Live At The Fillmore West CD (2006)
Simple Twist Of Fate
$7.59 Recorded live at Fillmore West, San Francisco, California on February 5 and 7, 1971. Originally released on Atlantic (7205). Includes liner notes by David Nathan.
When Aretha Franklin recorded 1971's LIVE AT FILLMORE WEST, she was backed by a group of veteran session musicians on a mix of popular interpretations along with some of her trademark numbers. Opening with Otis Redding's "Respect," Franklin made Stephen Stills' "Love The One You're With" her own with the help of Billy Preston's joyous organ playing while Bread's saccharine "Make It With You" was injected with a healthy shot of sexy sassiness.
Aretha Franklin's underrated piano playing and a healthy display of her gospel roots make FILLMORE one of the more special recordings in Lady Soul's vast canon. Franklin's skill on the eighty-eights particularly shines on her swinging treatment of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" and the jubilant "Don't Play That Song." Franklin also plays electric piano on "Dr. Feelgood," and from this point on she turns Bill Graham's hall into a Baptist church. Between the call-and-response of her background singers and King Curtis' skillful band-leading/saxophone playing, Franklin's high point came when she brought Ray Charles out for the reprise of the testimonial "Spirit In The Dark" followed by the uplifting "Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand)."

| | Cassandra Wilson Traveling Miles CD (1999)
Simple Twist Of Fate
$11.69 TRAVELING MILES was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
Throughout the '90s the smoky-voiced contralto Cassandra Wilson has shunned piano accompaniment in favor of close-miked acoustic guitars, evoking a moodily sensual atmosphere in which pop, blues, country and straight jazz vocals all merge together. It helps that Wilson has a distinctly Southern blues cast to her singing, a quality immediately apparent on "Run The Voodoo Down," the funky opener to TRAVELING MILES, her impeccably self-produced homage to Miles Davis.
As is her wont, Wilson has chosen to mix it up on this tribute, setting lyrics to Davis compositions such as "Blue In Green," "Tutu" and "ESP" while reprising two favorite Miles covers, "Someday My Prince Will Come" and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time." The ...
