Path We Tread album
$8.05 Interestingly, Horn rarely takes a solo, but repeats the songs over and over, slightly changing the phrasing and continuously building on the piano to change the emphasis. Every cut is a masterpiece, but the ...
| | Shirley Horn I Remember Miles CD (1998)
Path We Tread CD music
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia Records catalogue for her tribute because, as she explains in the liner notes, Davis liked her to sing ballads, and ballads are Horn's specialty. She can slow down time in a unique and spellbinding way. Her sultry and smoky vocals are intimate and conversational, relying on odd metered timing and silence, rather than volume, ...
| | Kinks Ultimate Collection CDs (2002) (Import) Thailand
Path We Tread music CDs
$19.69 Although generally not as highly regarded by the critics as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or the Who, the Kinks may well have influenced far more musicians. The three-chord sledgehammer proto-metal burst of teenage lust called "You Really Got Me," the Kinks' third single and first hit, touched off a garage band explosion, which in turn influenced the rise of punk a decade later. Blessed with an astute songwriter in Ray Davies, the Kinks followed the template of "You Really Got Me" for a couple years, racking up hits with "All Day and All of the Night," "Tired of Waiting for You," and "Till the End of the Day." But Davies had more than one card in his pocket, and he blossomed into a sharp social satirist ("Dedicated ...

| | Laurie Performance A Anderson Bright Red CD (1994)
Path We Tread music CDs
$11.65 BRIGHT RED (1994) is the outgrowth of STORIES FROM THE NEW BIBLE, a series of tales developed by Laurie Anderson. These STORIES were performed at live concerts ("readings") in the early '90s and were subsequently published in book form before Anderson had developed the studio "song" versions heard on BRIGHT RED. For Anderson, "song" often suggests an exploration of language rather than any traditional sense of "singing." She addresses an array of topics, covering everything from war to pop culture (in Anderson's view, the two are not really that far apart).
Anderson is a respected name on New York's avant-garde scene, and she performs here with other key figures-Arto Lindsay, Adrian Belew, Marc Ribot, and Lou Reed (who provides his usual deadpan vocals on "In Our Sleep"). Perhaps most importantly, Brian Eno, the king of minimalism and sound experimentation, lends his talents to BRIGHT RED. His touch is evident. Anderson's voice hovers quietly over sparse, largely ambient musical sculptures, her delivery varying between sung ...

| | Lawrence Arms Apathy And Exhaustion CD (2002)
Path We Tread album
$6.69 Modern life is no picnic, and life on the road for a young band is oftentimes frustrating, tiring, and tiresome, brightened only by the occasional moments of glory and glee. So after a year of uninterrupted touring, it's no wonder that the Lawrence Arms felt little more than Apathy and Exhaustion. And why Fat Wreck Chords immediately signed the band and sent it straight into the studio, for Fat head Fat Mike has enough road experience to know that a band on the edge is sure to knock out a record of raw emotion and edgy exuberance bordering on total nihilism. Beyond the band's revved-up emotional state and got-my-second-wind exhilaration, the trio has another winning card up its sleeve -- two lead singers. Gruff bassist Clarence Darrow (aka Brendan), all raspy, too-many-cigs-and-shots gravel tones, handles the more ...
| | Wauvenfold 3fold CD (2002)
Path We Tread CD music
$10.59 The first full-length Wauvenfold CD collects three previously released EPs. Firmly entrenched in the "melodic IDM" camp as staked out by artists like Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, and æ-Ziq, Wauvenfold (Noel Murphy and Tom Hill of London) offer inventive programming and solid tunes. The duo show a preference for distorted, crunchy beats that contrast with the drifting keyboard melodies floating on top, and most of the 14 tracks here offer variations on this template. Wauvenfold even showcase a welcome sense of musical wit, getting ...
| | Heroine Sheiks Siamese Pipe CD (2002)
Path We Tread music CDs
$13.05 The second album by the Heroine Sheiks is in-your-face angst, and one would expect no less from Shannon Selberg. As such willfully brutal post-punk goes, though, it's fairly strong. There are strong traces of funk, experimental electronic washes, and hard rock in the ominous guitar crunch. Selberg is a considerably better singer than most vocalists who play their hand at this game, letting some hints of humor and hip phrasing into his admirable lungpower. But the lyrics, as could be anticipated, are not feel-good stuff, right from the opening "Army Brat," with its couplet, "I am an army brat/My dick's a baseball bat." More fun trouble to contemplate follows, where it's the ...
| | Zeromancer Clone Your Lover CD (2000)
Path We Tread songs
$14.29 Although Clone Your Lover is the second Zeromancer CD made available in the U.S., it seems to have actually been the band's first full-length album, originally released in 2000. It finds the group working in a style that will be instantly recognizable to fans of Orgy and, to some extent, Prodigy: the band's sound consists of equal parts rock, pop, industrial, and goth, and while purist devotees ...
