| | Jihad Jerry & The Evildoers Mine Is Not A Holy War CD (2006)
Broken Record
$12.39 2006 has been a year of strange happenings in the Devo camp -- first the Spud Boys reinvented themselves as a tween-friendly pop act called Devo 2.0 with the help of the Disney corporation, and now Jerry Casale, one of the group's founding members, has revamped his persona while overhauling the band's malevolent synth-pop as Jihad Jerry & the Evildoers. In addition to Jerry Casale, Jihad Jerry's debut album, Mine Is Not a Holy War, also features fellow Devo veterans Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob Mothersbaugh, and Robert Casale, with John Freese (who has played with Devo on recent live dates) behind the drums, so it's no surprise that this album sounds like an updated and slightly funkier version of Devo. Unfortunately, the Devo albums it most closely resembles are mediocre later efforts such as Shout and Smooth Noodle Maps; this is aggressively uptempo electronic pop/rock that doesn't have a fraction of the sonic adventure of Devo's ...

| | Howard Devoto Jerky Versions Of The Dream CD (1983) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Broken Record
$9.69 Erstwhile Buzzcock and former front man of post-punk outfits Magazine and Luxuria, Howard Devoto has always been somewhat difficult to peg musically. After disbanding Magazine in the early '80s, Devoto went on to pursue a short-lived solo career, resulting in his lone 1983 effort, JERKY VERSIONS OF THE DREAM. More pop-based than any of his previous efforts, the songs all feature Devoto's distinctive croon--a discomfiting mix of seduction and caustic menace. Like his material with Magazine, Devoto's lyrics are peppered with poetic allusions to politics, both personal and social. The slow building heat of ...

| | Space Cadet Greatest Hits CD (2003)
Broken Record
$9.29 While SPACE CADET's roots in punk are unequivocally visible throughout the 14 tracks of their Kirtland/Trauma debut Greatest Hits, the quartet is just as influenced by British-style pop rock of the late seventies. The bands heart lies closely to artists like David Bowie, John Lennon and, more recently comparisons could be made to the Foo Fighters and Jimmy Eat World. "We may wear our influences on our sleeves," laughs SPACE CADET's Ted Levin,"but at least they're sounds we really enjoy revisiting and throwing in our own energetic spin." In 2002 SPACE CADET released their own EP, The Propulsion. After the EP's release, the band began cutting some new demos for their playfully titled full-length, Greatest Hits, which fell into the hands of the founder of Kirtland Records. By June 2003, the band had inked a record deal with Kirtland/Trauma Records (Bush, No Doubt), and now production was in full swing. During the recording the band still found time to play shows, including this year's Summer 2003 Warped Tour.
By calling their Greatest Hits CD as such, Space Cadet is being very ironic. This is the Texans' first full-length album, and the focus is on new material; thus, this 2003 release isn't really a greatest-hits package. Another thing that adds to the irony and humor of the title is the fact that the term greatest-hits sounds somewhat dated in the 21st century; it has a '60s/'70s connotation, whereas most of today's artists prefer the term "best of." OK, now that it's been established that Space Cadet has a sense of irony, what about the music itself? The music itself is quite solid. Space Cadet is among the numerous post-grunge bands that surfaced in the early 2000s; the thing that separates them from most of the post-grunge competition is the hooky power pop element they bring ...
