This portrait celebrates the extraordinary quest of Segovia who fell in love with the sounds of Spanish guitar as a child, and within 20 years had elevated it from the status of a folk instrument to the highest levels of the international concert platform. The 2 Christopher Nupen films included are Segovia at Los Olivos filmed at his home on the Costa Del Sol in Andalusia in 1975, and Andres Segovia: The Song of the Guitar, filmed in Granada and the Palaces of Alhambra when he was 84. Included is music by Albeniz, Bach, Scarlatti, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Granados, and more. Andrés Segovia was an unrivaled virtuoso on the Spanish guitar. Two documentary programs on this extraordinary man are presented here, both by filmmaker Christopher Nupen. SEGOVIA AT LOS OLIVOS was shot at Segovia's Andalusian home in 1967, and captures him at the height of his powers; ANDRÉS SEGOVIA: THE SONG OF THE GUITAR was filmed in 1976, in Grenada and the Alhambra, when the legendary musician was 84--but still going strong. Andres Segovia - In Portrait DVD
$6.49 Following the platinum success of SLOWHAND, BACKLESS continued Eric Clapton's transformation into a singer/songwriter with better-than-average chops after a lifetime of guitar godhood. Eschewing the star-studded cameos of NO REASON TO CRY, Clapton instead relied on his core group of the '70s: George Terry, Carl Radle, Jamie Oldaker, Dick Simms and Marcy Levy. Levy in particular, proved her worth by co-writing the slide-drenched "Roll It" with Slowhand. Her passionate testifying on this as well as her sparkling harmonies on the Don Williams-influenced "Promises" made up for fellow back-up singer Yvonne Elliman's departure following SLOWHAND's release.
Clapton's choice of composers to cover included Dylan ("Walk Out In The Rain," "If I Don't Be There By Morning"), J.J. Cale ("I'll Make Love To You Anytime") and Okie Danny Flowers ("Tulsa Time"). In addition, Slowhand added a nearly eight-minute interpretation of the blues standard "Early In The Morning" that finds ...

$20.99 The haunted psychologies of the individual and the national combine in the Spanish film EL MAR (THE SEA). During the Spanish Civil War of the 1930s, three friends witness the horrific murder of a classmate. Many years later, the three find themselves reunited, although under less than happy circumstances. Tur and Ramallo have been quarantined for tuberculosis, and their old friend Francisca is a nun working in the asylum. They all remain haunted by what occurred during the war, as all of Spain was, and struggle to reconcile with their pasts, their religion, and the growing homosexual attraction between Tur and Ramallo. EL MAR has ...

$11.35 A brunette Sarah Michelle Gellar stars opposite Alec Baldwin in this romantic coming-of-age story loosely based on the popular Melissa Banks book THE GIRL'S GUIDE TO HUNTING AND FISHING. Gellar plays Brett Eisenberg, a young woman working her way up New York City's publishing ladder. Eager to get ahead, Brett attends a book signing with hopes of meeting influential publishing giant Archie Knox (Alec Baldwin). No sooner do they trade glances than Archie is wooing Brett with extravagant dates, expensive gifts, and career assistance. The relationship is a storybook romance from the start, but slowly gets much more complicated due to the age difference and Archie's alcoholism.
Viewers might initially struggle to relate to the young protagonist--things seem to come a bit too easily for Brett, who conveniently lives rent-free in her grandmother's vacant and fancy Manhattan apartment. That said, it's easy to understand why the filmmakers chose this scenario, as New York does look better through the eyes of privilege. It is a land mysteriously without subways, and where every building has a doorman. The setting is contrived, but ...
