Notes:A jazz-rock recording that won critical acclaim in 1983 and drew a cult following to the Gregory James band. This recording is now being re-released. The quartet of electric and acoustic guitars, wind instruments, bass and drums rings melodies that emerge from fiery rock band Video Rouge that James started before this recording.'Great moments...electric, acoustic and synthesized guitars are both strong and subtle...Bridges the gap between musical adventure and mass appeal...Four-and-a-half stars...' Downbeat 'A first-rate electric guitar player.' Variety 'High-energy polyrhythmic fusion...(to) pastoral impressionistic sketches. In both, James' guitar lines are simple, direct, and melodic.' Guitar PlayerBio:Gregory James burst on the contemporary scene in 1978 and has continued to garner praise, airplay, and fans in his restless search for musical adventure. After performing with Chico Hamilton in New York and touring both coasts, he returned to native San Francisco to start the fiery rock band, Video Rouge. A return to jazz roots in the early '80s saw the release of the critically acclaimed albums Alphabet Town and Tibet on Rogue Records. James plays electric, acoustic, and synthesized guitars on this recording. He is joined by Barry Shulman on wind instruments, Bruce Barrett on bass, and Robin Tolleson on drums.

Personnel: Gregory James (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, guitar synthesizer, tabla); Robin Tolleson (drums).
Audio Mixer: Harn Soper.
Audio Remasterer: Cookie Marenco.

I bought this on vinyl back when it first came out can't believe its been over twenty years and I enjoyed it then as I am enjoying it now. Call it fusion, acid, free form or whatever it sounds like nothing else I've heard and I highly recommend it.

30 Classic Capitol & Reprise Hits On 1 CD. Personnel: Dean Martin (vocals).
Liner Note Authors: Dean Martin; Deana Martin; Steven Van Zandt; Gail Martin Downey.
Dino: The Essential Dean Martin is an attempt by Capitol Records to fill up a single CD to the brim (30 tracks in nearly 78 minutes) with Dean Martin hits in the manner of the Beatles' 1. It's a welcome development from a label that was previously content to survey the same territory on the 1998 collection Greatest Hits: King of Cool, which contained only 16 tracks and ran less than 50 minutes. Martin put 36 recordings in the pop singles charts between 1949 and 1969, and 23 of them are found here. Of the four Top 40 hits not included, the most notable is the 1964 version of "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You." The collection does include the 1960 non-hit version of that song instead, a decision that probably was made to reduce the number of essentially similar arrangements heard on Martin's '60s singles for Reprise Records. After he hit number one with "Everybody ...

Midwest Cowboy
Bizzy Bone Midwest Cowboy CD  (2006)

Alphabet Town
CD $14.75  5 stars Audio Samples
Maverick rapper Bizzy Bone's third release of 2006 -- and it's only July -- is yet another album that suggests the overly prolific man could up his chances if he slowed down and beefed up his quality control. At times, The Midwest Cowboy recalls 2004's very good Alpha and Omega, an album that included quite a bit of Bizzy's singing, and while it had plenty of the cryptic post-Bone lyrics that are now infamous, it didn't indulge to the point of disaster like some later albums. Also like Alpha and Omega, comprehendible bits of Bizzy's uneasy personal life shine through, extra enticing for hardcore fans and maybe just enough to sway the curious. Add to this some subtle hints that he misses Bone and would like to patch things up, and you've got what should be Bizzy's great return, but getting to these grand statements means slogging through eccentric filler and productions from an overworked Playalitical, who handles nearly everything in the background. Playalitical drowns the more difficult cuts in layers of Bizzy's vocals plus horns, harps, and what have you, but he's perfect for the cuts where the rapper decides to dip his toe back into the mainstream. The seductive "Lovey, Dovey," the swaggering "Around the World," and the old-school-feelin' "Wit a $20 Dolla Bill" are the best examples, and with the confessional "I Must Fess Up" added to them, you'd have one killer EP. Riveting in spots, The Midwest Cowboy is another frustrating Bizzy release, but it could have been a contender. ~ David Jeffries
