"Woody Guthrie meets Tom Waits!" - Cookie Marenco"A hymn to and a cry for the American West..." -Brian Doyle, Portland Magazine"Much like an archetypal ski bum, Brennan's songs flee from structure, full of asymmetrical verses and irregular line lengths, and avoiding rhyme like it's avian flu. Brennan's clearly following the speak-singing storytelling style of Greg Brown or Tom Waits...If you can't afford your own mountain cabin, this album will take you right there."-Willamette Week ***Cut live at 8500 ft in a log cabin, at the top of Little Cottonwood Canyon in the Wasatch Rockies. This record is 100% Acoustic. No headphones. No overdubs. Only mics. Little Cottonwood is an aural collection of short stories. This is your Sunday morning record. Shortly after Telluride Bluegrass Festival selected Brennan as first alternate in their songwriting competition, he headed to Alta, Utah to cut "Little Cottonwood," and is releasing it nationally in a grassroots partnership with Berkeley-based Clif Bar, as a part of the Keep It Simple philosophy of their new Clif Nectar bar.Via 1% For The Planet, 1% of album sales will benefit the Organic Farming Research Foundation based in Santa, Cruz, CA. Little Cottonwood music CDs
$14.65 Taylor Swift abandons any pretense that she's a teen on her second album, FEARLESS--which isn't to say that she suddenly tarts herself up, running away from her youth in a manner that's all too familiar to many teen stars. Swift's maturation is deliberate and careful, styled after the crossover country-pop of Shania Twain and Faith Hill before they turned into divas. Despite the success of her self-titled 2006 debut, there's nothing at all diva-like about Swift on FEARLESS: she's soft-spoken and considerate, a big sister instead of a big star. Nowhere is this truer than on "Fifteen," a kind warning for a teen to watch her heart sung from the perspective of a woman who's perhaps twice that age--a sly trick for the 18-year-old Swift. There may be a hint of youthfulness to her singing but that's the only hint of girlishness here; her writing--and she had a hand in penning all 13 tracks here, with six of them bearing her solitary credit--is sharply, subtly crafted and the music is softly assured, never pushing its hooks too hard. Like many country-pop albums of the 2000s, the pop heavily outweighs the country--there ...

Little Cottonwood CD music
$27.59 This compilation from WEA International combines on a single disc the two late-1960s albums (Earth Opera and The Great American Eagle Tragedy) released by Earth Opera, a Boston-based group led by Peter Rowan and David Grisman. Earth Opera, released in 1968, reflects the Sgt. Pepper influence rampant at the time, and Rowan's songs are draped in arrangements that reference folk, rock, jazz, jug band, classical and country, sometimes all within the same track. Although a couple of these cuts, like the truly odd "The Red Sox Are Winning" and the feathery and delicate "The Child Bride," are fascinating efforts, much of Earth Opera is simply too ornate, affected and needlessly complicated to work as anything other than a curio of the time. The group's second effort, The Great American Eagle Tragedy, released in 1969, improves thing considerably, dropping much of the baroque feel of Earth Opera for something that resembles an early blast of country-rock. Although tunes can still get complicated ...
| | Chatham County Line Speed Of The Whippoorwill CD (2006)
Little Cottonwood music CDs
$12.49 On their third album in four years, Chatham County Line enlisted producer Brian Paulson to help them bring their raw & ready vision to digital. Featuring ten new Dave Wilson originals, a co-write between him and mandonlinist John Teer, a Teer original, and one by banjoist Chandler Holt, along with a cover of Don Robertson, the formula isn't all that different -- most of this is contemporary bluegrass that could have been recorded in the heyday of the Stanley Brothers or Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. Speed of the Whippoorwill is more sophisticated, however, mostly in the lyrics of Wilson, who employs humor along with heartbreak in his songs. There is a more Mark Twain-like view of the world, even if it is obvious in places. Check the lyrics to "By the Riverside": "Skipped out of work, just to ease my thoughts/Went down to the riverside, just to get lost/Got some fishing line and a hickory limb/Sat there thinking about Huck & Jim." The bluegrass stomp is plentiful here and it always works: "Company Blues," "Rock Pile," the breakdown "Savoy Special," and "Coming Home." Less successful are the ballads, such as the Louvin Brothers-inspired "They ...
