$12.50 | | Trans-Siberian Orchestra Christmas Eve And Other Stories CD (1996)
Anton Diabelli: Grande Sonate Brillante
$9.95 What would happen if members of Savatage decided to write some Christmas songs? Easy: Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This "supergroup" is the brainchild of Jon Oliva and Paul O'Neill (respectively the leader-keyboardist and the producer of Savatage). They hired Al Pitrelli (Asia, Savatage) to play guitars, Robert Kinkel to help with keyboards, John Middleton (also a member of Savatage) on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums. Lead vocals are shared by six vocalists, while some of the backing vocals are handled by Savatage lead singer Zachary Stevens. Christmas Eve and Other Stories is a concept album: all the songs are built as chapters of a book, each telling part of a larger story. The plot here is of a young angel sent down to Earth to find and bring back to the Lord "the one thing that best represents everything good that has been done in the name of this day." The angel's quest takes him all over the world, through Russia and Sarajevo, until he finally hears the prayer of a father. This last piece is the strongest moment on the album and makes for a miniature story within the larger story. It is basically told in a trilogy of songs: in the first, "Ornament," we hear the father's prayer, explaining how he hasn't seen his daughter in many years. In "Old City Bar," the angel finds the daughter, standing alone outside a bar, and talks to the bartender who, out of a random act of kindness, takes all the cash from his register drawer and gives it to the girl so she can go home. The third song, "This Christmas Day," has the father praising God, thanking him for bringing his daughter back to him on this night of all nights. It is a very touching story, pondering the thought that "If you want to arrange it/This world you can change it/If we could somehow make this/Christmas thing last/By helping a neighbor/Or even a stranger." Musically, the band has taken some traditional Christmas songs ("O Come All Ye ...
| | The Best Of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere CD (2007)
Anton Diabelli: Grande Sonate Brillante
$10.39 Issued in 2007, this Andrea Bocelli collection presents many of the Italian classical/pop-crossover artist's most memorable vocal performances. Highlights of the compilation include "Sogno" and "Because We Believe," tracks that fully reveal Bocelli's emotive and resonant voice, as well as duets with Celine Dion ("The Prayer," a delicate ballad) and Sarah Brightman (the wistful "Time to Say Goodbye"). While VIVERE may be a bit too concise for diehard Bocelli fans, it serves as a perfect introduction to the beloved singer.
Classical crossover mainstay Andrea Bocelli's first greatest-hits collection to date, released nearly a decade-and-a-half after he made his album debut in 1994, The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere includes many of his best-known songs plus five new recordings exclusive to this compilation. His international breakthrough album, Romanza (1997), is well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Sarah Brightman on "Time to Say Goodbye." His most successful album, the classical crossover follow-up effort Sogno (1999), is likewise well represented with a few inclusions, including his English-language duet with Céline Dion on "The Prayer." Later albums Cieli di Toscana (2001) and Amore (2006) are also represented with a couple inclusions on The Best of Andrea Bocelli: Vivere. The five new recordings exclusive to Vivere include "La Voce del Silenzio"; "Dare to Live (Vivere)," a duet with Italian ...

| | John Williams Spielberg/Williams Collaboration CD (1990)
Anton Diabelli: Grande Sonate Brillante
$7.59 Composer John Williams and director Steven Spielberg have long had one of the most symbiotic relationships in Hollywood. They've helped each other become the best known, most successful, and most powerful men in their respective fields. Spielberg has hired Williams to score nearly every movie he's ever made. Meanwhile, at the end of the 20th century, Williams had earned three of his five Academy Awards and ten of his staggering 38 Oscar nominations for Spielberg films. The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration was a 1991 attempt to encapsulate the fruits of their alliance. It contains some of the best work ever done by Williams and his Boston Pops Orchestra. Particularly noteworthy are his famous themes for Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. Spielberg has expressed the opinion that E.T. is Williams' finest effort, and it's hard to disagree with his assessment. The magical piano solo "Over the Moon" provides a much needed respite from the bombastic Sousa-esque marches of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and 1941. Bombast and saccharine sentimentality are common occupational hazards for Williams and Spielberg, and this CD is laced with occasional overdoses of both. Moreover, it is less satisfying as a retrospective of Williams' career than some of the other compilations on the market, because its focus on the Spielberg scores precludes the inclusion of landmark works like Star Wars, Superman, and Home Alone. It is also out of date, having been released too early to include some of the very finest Spielberg scores, like Saving Private Ryan, Amistad, Jurassic Park, Hook, and the Oscar-winning Schindler's List. Consumers interested in a true greatest-hits compilation would be better served by one of the more recent discs. ~ Evan Cater
