This single release combines the best of USE YOUR ILLUSION I and II.
Four years after becoming an uninvited guest at the party that is the music industry with its seminal debut, APPETITE FOR DESTRUCTION, Guns N' Roses released USE YOUR ILLUSION I & II. Thanks to a reckless approach toward life and music, G N' R was constantly at the center of controversy and the result was that much of it was chronicled on this two-volume project. By this time, original drummer Steven Adler had been dismissed due to alleged drug dependency problems and was replaced by the Cult's Matt Sorum. Keyboardist Dizzy Reed was also added as a member.
ILLUSION I found Axl Rose ranting on songs about being sued by a neighbor ("Right Next Door to Hell"), dysfunctional relationships ("Back off Bitch"), and a drug overdose ("Coma"). Amid all the spewed bile, G N' R scored three Top 40 hits with a Wings cover ("Live and Let Die"), a piano-driven, Elton John-flavored epic ("November Rain"), and a hard-edged ballad ("Don't Cry"). Celebrity cameos include a then unknown Shannon Hoon, Hanoi Rocks' Mike Monroe, and Alice Cooper, who makes a particularly sinister contribution to "The Garden."

Traditional European Yuletide music existed centuries before the advent of recording technology, and 21st century listeners will never have a chance to hear European singers and musicians of the 16th or 17th centuries performing the Christmas carols of their time. But American Christmas pop songs from the 20th century are another matter. Standards like Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" and Mel Tormé's "The Christmas Song" were written at a time when millions of people owned record players, and 21st century listeners who want to hear what Christmas music sounded like 50, 60, or 70 years ago need only visit their local CD store. The focus of Swingin' Christmas Party is swing and traditional pre-rock pop artists performing Christmas pop standards, and the recordings (all of them from RCA's vaults) date back to the '30s, '40s, and '50s. Although the Poor have been portrayed as a great lost band from the 1960s, the evidence on this short collection, which brings together the four singles they recorded between 1966 and 1968, as well as two singles released by the Soul Survivors, a nascent version of the band, between 1965 and 1966, suggests that the talent certainly was there, but unfortunately not the material. Randy Meisner (who went on to play a key role in both Poco and the Eagles), Pat Shanahan, and Allen Kemp (who both ended up in New Riders of the Purple Sage) were all members of the Poor, and the tracks here show definite potential, with beautiful, high harmonies that fall somewhere between the folk-rock feel of the Beau Brummels and the sunshine pop of the Association. All that was really missing in the mix were some quality songs, and it's telling that a pair of Shanahan compositions, "I Can't Stand to Be in Love with You" and the delicate "Snow Man," both recorded before the Poor existed, are two of the more memorable moments here.
