Zu (Italy): Mats Gustafsson, Luca (baritone saxophone); Massimo (bass guitar); Jacopo (drums). Recording information: Locomotive Studio, Rome, Italy (10/2004). This is truly frightening music. Zu are an Italian trio famous for their collaborations with Eugene Chadbourne and Spaceways Incorporated. They play a gritty, aggressive meld of free jazz, rock, and funk. Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson is known for his signature bleating tone, his compositions, and his ability to play with almost anybody. Put them together and what you have is a romp, something so wild, wooly, and downright spine-tingling, you'd think you were in a sonic no-man's-land that was equal parts heaven and hell. Recorded in a Roman studio, this set of nine confrontations -- because that's indeed what they are -- features a pair of baritone saxophonists, electric bass, and drums; there is little free jazz, little free improvisation noodling. If it shows up at all, as it does at the end of "Eating the Landscape," and the beginning of "The King Devours His Sons," it's short-lived and used merely as a way of breaking into something wholly other, wholly ugly, wholly terrifying. This is bleating, kill-your-ox-slowly music; it kicks, screams, punches, and fights to the death, exhausting both players and listeners alike. Never has such an ugly beauty of a free-for-all sounded so appealing, so dynamic, so completely, mind-numbingly delightful. How to Raise an Ox should have been called "How to Kill and Torture Your Ox Without Mercy." Since there has been nothing like it since Last Exit, it's irresistible, addictive, and perhaps even evil! ~ Thom Jurek Zu How To Raise An Ox Songs How To Raise An Ox Review

A good single-disc compilation of his Capitol years, covering 1953 to the beginning of the 1960s. His Capitol output was so extensive that it's impossible for a 20-song anthology to give a comprehensive overview even of the highlights. Also, as this focuses on the albums he made with Capitol, some of ...

How To Raise An Ox
$6.89 Personnel: Dave Brubeck (piano); Paul Desmond (alto saxophone); Bill Smith (clarinet); Bob Bates, Eugene Wright (bass); Joe Dodge, Joe Morello (drums). Compilation producers: Russell Gloyd, Didier C. Deutsch, Seth Rothstein. Recorded between 1956 & 1967. Digitally remastered by Darcy M. Proper (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York). This is the tamer, politer side of Dave Brubeck, for sure, collecting ten songs, mostly ballads and never uptempo (though once in a while it gets brisk), from 1954 to 1967. For the most part these are soothing, though not overly slick, interpretations of standards by the likes of Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart, as well as "These Foolish Things" and "Besame Mucho." It includes one unreleased track, a 1963 version of "You Go to My Head," on which clarinetist Bill Smith ...
