The trend of issuing collections of songs compiled by DJs and producers (the BACK TO MINE series, for example) has proven quite popular, and the "Digs" series is a welcome addition to the bandwagon. DJ Gilles Peterson (who also hosts a radio show on the BBC) is renown for his staggeringly large and esoteric record collection, much of which dates from the 1960s and '70s, and nearly all of which has never seen re-issue. The result, as one might imagine, is a treasure trove of the rarest-of-rare soul and funk grooves. It's unlikely that the average listener will know some (or any) of these artists, but that doesn't keep GILLES PETERSON DIGS AMERICA from being a remarkable listen from beginning to end.

Eddie & Ernie's discography is quite a diaspora, spanning about a decade, 15 singles, almost as many labels, and some releases under names other than Eddie & Ernie. This CD does an admirable job of pulling together 24 tracks (seven of them previously unissued) from their disperse output, forming a good though not great collection of punchy period soul with good harmonizing.
