Sl-Ums album
$13.15 Enter the Jacka. The death of 2Pac in the mid 90's ripped the heart out of West Coast Hip Hop. At the same time a young street poet named the Jacka was honing his skills in the Bay Area Rap game. Always open minded, he was influenced by b-boys and thugs, pimps and Imams. The Jacka has since developed into an established, well-rounded, well-versed emcee in the right place to bring the West Coast some serious attention. The Jacka's music is a reflection of his life. He witnessed the birth of the dope game and the drug war that followed, as the battle was waged in his community, on his block, and in his house. Memories of departed loved ones haunt his mind and soul. His release is to share his experiences through his music. Reality hurts. Rap is the Jacka's medicine. That and some purple. Jacka's success proves his mettle as an emcee. He has been featured on over 50 albums over the past six years. His contributions to the Mob Figaz self-entitled album resulted in over 100,000 units sold. His tour with Yukmouth (of the Luniz), C-Bo, the Mob Figaz, and Tech 9ne exposed him to nationwide notoriety. His first solo release (featuring Too $hort, Cormega, Christion, and Yukmouth) in 2002 sold over 30,000 units. Jacka sold these units himself, in the Bay Area and through shipping to one-stops across the country. Though great support came from the Bay Area, sixty percent of Jacka's sales came from outside of California. The Jacka's upcoming album, The Jack Artist, is sure to satisfy his fans and impress ...

| | Wild Bill Davison With Freddy Randall And His Band CD (1965)
Sl-Ums music CDs
$12.09 Recorded during his 1965 tour of England, this Wild Bill Davison CD expands the earlier LP from ten to 14 selections with the addition of four songs from a similar concert. The great cornetist is joined by trumpeter Freddy Randall (who is mostly in a supportive role), veteran trombonist George Chisholm, and Bruce Turner (on clarinet and alto) in a septet/octet that sometimes adds the vibes of Ronnie Gleaves. The repertoire is typical for a pair of spontaneous Wild Bill Davison dates with such standbys as "Royal Garden Blues," "Hindustan," "Struttin' With Some Barbecue," and "Riverboat Shuffle" featuring stirring ensembles and heated Dixieland solos. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Bobby Womack Facts Of Life CD (1973)
Sl-Ums songs
$9.45 One of Bobby Womack's best albums, THE FACTS OF LIFE is also one of the real landmarks of early '70s Southern soul. Highlights include an almost unrecognizably funky version of the venerable blues song "Nobody Wants You When You're Down and Out," complete with one of Womack's trademark raps (the title track is also almost totally spoken), and a gorgeous reading of "That's Heaven to Me" (originally done by his mentor Same Cooke).
There are also revelatory covers of both Aretha Franklin's "Natural Woman" (sung as "Natural Man," of course) and Burt Bachrach's "The Look of Love." The concluding take on Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" may not be as cosmic as the better known Jimi Hendrix version, but it does give Womack the album's one big opportunity ...
| | Curtis Mayfield Curtis CD (1970) Deluxe Edition
Sl-Ums album
$8.89 CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts the shiftlessness of America. Set to a funky groove, with smart horn arrangements and wah-wah guitar, this song is a brazen attack on social mores, racism, the Vietnam War, religious impropriety, and Nixon-era politics.
"We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" is another track that poignantly examines the race and class struggles of urban America. This song is made up of more than just a static groove; its tempos shift midway through and powerful brass figures, timpani punctuations, and harp glissandos ...
