Genetic and artistic brethren to New Orleans's No Limit family (he is the younger brother of Master P and C-Murder), Silkk the Shocker (whose real name is Vyshonne Miller) was one of the label's best selling artists. Working firmly in the musical style established by Master P., Silkk adopted the themes of gangsta rap and Dirty South hip-hop as his own and in the process--via numerous guest appearances and his own platinum-selling solo albums--helped the No Limit label build an independent rap empire. BEST OF skims the cream from Silkk's solo releases, offering a succinct 15-song overview of the artist. Best of all, the set is packed with cameos, with guest spots from Master P., Mystikal, C-Murder, and Fiend, so the album also serves as a fine introduction to New Orleans rap.
Personnel: Silkk the Shocker (rap vocals); Mya, Trina (vocals); Master P (rap vocals).
Photographer: Davis Factor.

Best Of Silkk The Shocker songs
$11.99 The Lost Boyz's energetic music takes hip-hop back to the days when guns and drugs, although present in urban communities, had not yet invaded hip-hop itself. Before the gangsta revolution, hip-hop more often meant a danceable track, a party theme and a positive message. With LEGAL DRUG MONEY, the Lost Boyz attempt to bring these elements back to the mainstream. They're well aware of what's going on in the real world around them, but "being real" isn't their mantra. When violence does intrude, as in "Renee," a love-in-the-ghetto story that ends in murder, it serves as a detail rather than as a theme. And more typical is "Music Makes Me High," whose subject is the delirious effect that hip-hop has on the Lost Boyz.
Legal Drug Money covers the same themes that many other hip-hop artists were covering in the mid-'90s. The Lost Boyz rap about getting high, being rich, and other topics typical of the genre. The best track on this album is easily "Renee," a song about a woman who fell in love with an MC but gets killed. Smif-n-Wessun's Dah Shinin and Heltah Skeltah's Nocturnal are similar in style to Legal Drug Money. ~ Dan Gizzi

Buy it now :)Wrong Side of Dawn's debut EP is a diverse, but yet a concise introduction to some of the many styles of rock that we have been and will be tearing up in a speaker near you. I'm very glad you've decided to take a closer look at us, and I'd like to give you my notes on some of our tunes:1. When I sat down to write the song that became "Running Scared," I told myself I wanted a simple but catchy Rolling Stones riff. Something energetic, but nice and easy to play. Somehow, though, I wound up with a pretty technically challenging guitar song. Nelson made this song possible by getting me to STOP writing lyrics for it, and by pushing for this song to be fun. And most important of all, it is fun.2. The nice thing about playing melody over one of Nelson's progressions is that it's almost impossible to screw up. The richness of the rhythm part will make any lead sound beautiful. Such is the case with "Flight II," which makes being a lead guitarist a pretty cushy job.3. Nelson had a very catchy and complete song in "Break Free" before I even appeared on this track. Karen's vocal harmonies only made the song more beautiful, so I figured my job at this point was to balance things out and give it a little bit of a mean streak.4. We're giving you everything we got in the last minute of "Out of Time." If you can't feel that when you listen, you might have to check your pulse.5. On this one, we owe all the thanks to the public domain and to Alfred Lord Tennyson. It all started when I ...
