The Mars Volta: Omar Rodriguez-Lopez, Jon Theodore, Amery AWOL Smith, Pablo Gonzalez, Isaiah "Ikey" Owens, Juan Alderette, Marcel Rodriguez-Lopez, Henry Trejo, Adrian G. Gonzalez, Cedric Bixler-Zavala. Scab Dates' accompanying photography is a frenetic blur of instruments and sweaty hair. Singers stand on amplifiers, and keyboardists stare intently at the veins popping in their hands; drummers reach over snares to tweak guitar strings, and saxophones appear out of the ether. It's an accurate portrayal of the Mars Volta's collagist sound, their subtitled and bullet-pointed avant metal that increasingly seems like the soundtrack to a film only Omar Rodriguez-Lopez can see. Still, even at their most insular (some would say self-indulgent), the Mars Volta seethe with intensity. Scab Dates proves this. Most of the more wandering elements of De-Loused and Frances the Mute disappear for this live document, replaced by hails of screaming organ, increased thump to the rhythm section, and Cedric Bixler-Zavala showing off the insane volatility in his voice. They still get jammy in places, but the extended guitar solos and softer textures lead to inevitable explosions. As nothing's ever been traditional with the Mars Volta, it's no surprise that their live albums aren't, either. The songs flow seamlessly and take subtitled digressions just like the studio records. In the liners, Rodriguez-Lopez describes how field recordings he made while on tour found their way into the mix, and there are no "How ya doin', Phoenix?!" or "Let me see you jump, San Diego!" from Bixler-Zavala to discern where the songs were recorded. All you get are dates -- "recorded between May 2004 and May 2005" -- and the occasional bit of crowd chatter to tell you this is live. (Well, the sound quality is a little off, too -- sometimes the drums sound terribly flat.) This means that Scab Dates is yet another intriguing window into the Mars Volta's world, instead of just a live album holdover. Highlights include "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt" and the Comatorium highlight "Cicatriz," which becomes Scab Dates' epic closing suite. ~ Johnny Loftus Rising from the ashes of emo-punk band At The Drive-In, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Baxter-Zavala formed the anti-genre outfit the Mars Volta, one of the most far-out bands in contemporary rock. Like FRANCES THE MUTE, their sophomore album, SCAB DATES--a live album culled from various performances between 2003 and 2005--meshes psychedelia, hard rock, trance, Latin music, electronica, and progressive rock into a mercurial, unpredictable amalgam. With their 19-piece band, Rodriguez-Lopez and Baxter-Zavala spin their audiences through a barrage of styles and a plethora of instrumentation. Surprisingly, the Mars Volta are able to replicate much of their insanely complex music in a live setting. This is the sort of brain-melting fare for which the term "trippy" was invented, and the disc's 72-minute duration gives the musicians plenty of room to stretch out (especially on the closer, "Cicatriz," which clocks in at about 40 minutes). Buckle your seatbelts.Rolling Stone (No. 988, p.122) - 3 out of 5 stars - "...[A] balls-out concert record made for the headphones." Uncut (p.113) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A] blend of free jazz, Cuban rhythms, prog-rock, metal and Afrobeat..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "'Haruspex' makes viscous dub soup out of febrile jazz organ and Cedric Bixler-Zavala's vocal ululations." Mars Volta Scab Dates Songs Scab Dates Music Review Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) Dissapointing Not much new material here, and the material you do get is of poor sound quality. TMV live is not half as impressive as their studio prowess and creativity. I love every release from this band, but this live album seems like a dumb idea. If you are a big fan, you will probably still appreciate some parts of the most interesting jams. Submitted by Mark (Knoxville, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great, but really a fan's album Although there are some iritating slips into performance art there is enough excellent material here to easily justify the price. The early numbers are patchy but Cedric Bixler's voice shines through on the excellent but short Concertina. The main part of the album, Cicatriz, is superb. After the imrovised intro comes the first and only realy recognisable section. But interestingly no longer sounding like 'Lamb' era Genesis, but like the Mars Volta themselves. The heavenly second section from the album is barley recognisable, then there is a huges swage of excellent new material, some improvised, followed by some rather silly noise mixing.
The skill of the multipiece band realy comes through, especially Omar himself and Jon Theordores drum work.
I wouldnt play this to introduce anyone to TMV, but for the fan its a must have

Essential Live Material! These songs, with relatively good sound quality, display the amazing creative talents of this band. There are totally new songs here, the opener "Abrasions Mount the Timpani" is babies crying and wierd noises, while "Caviglia" and "Haruspex" are release-worthy tripped out jams.
The three actual songs played here are "Concertina", "Take the Veil Cerpin Taxt", and "Cicatriz ESP". Concertina is basically a straight out cover with little detour. "Take the Veil" is definately more jammed out to a great length while Cicatriz is a 40-minute rollercoaster with totally new parts altogether. There are some great new jams/grooves on here destined to make it onto the next TMV release perhaps.
How ever you slice it, Scabdates is a great example of one of the best bands on the planet right now! Submitted by Jeff (ON, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
"Perfection" would be an understatement If you are new to The Mars Volta, never fear, for they are as good as you want them to be. If you aren't completely engulfed by the first 20 seconds of any particualar song, just walk away and never turn back...but if you have a natural overabundance of curiousity, then by all means, sit down and really listen, and more importantly feel every moment of their music. Trust me, you'll be glad you did. Submitted by sangiuliano_michael (San Antonio, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
