Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice: Wooden Wand Jehovah, Heidi Diehl, Glucas Crane, Steven the Harvester, Satya Sai Jehovah.
The Flood is typical modern psychedelic indie folk-rock. Like their more famous peers Animal Collective, the strangely named Wooden Wand & the Vanishing Voice focus primarily on raw atonal atmosphere, where instruments and voices meander and waver for the sake of mood rather than melody. "The Flood" presents pretty much the entire story. All the bandmembers sing the song in its entirety, with their voices overlapping but no pretense toward harmony. Guitars wail like scratched keyboards, as a musical structure akin to murky soap bubbles emerges over the course of 14 minutes. The song wanders at a snail's pace, at once soothing in its rhythm yet disturbing in its myriad screeching sound effects. The remaining five tracks basically repeat the formula. Whether the album as a whole is a glorious miasma or an unlistenable nuisance is entirely up to the listener. Only die-hard fans of dissonant psychedelic acoustica need apply here. Others won't find the beauty buried beneath the chaos. ~ Tim DiGravinaThe Wire (p.69) - "[T]here's a darkness here that belies the hippy quality. The antediluvian world, sketched in six songs, resounds with some scary howling feedback." Wooden Wand & The Vanishing Voi Flood Songs | 1. | Snake Earl |

Purchase Flood CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Hood Outside Closer CD (2005)
Flood album
$11.65 Atop the modernist disco beat and lush strings of "The Negatives," Hood urges listeners to escape to the furthest place from their house until their spirit completely breaks, and then to "watch the birds fly round, just like the first time." It could well serve as the band's prerequisite for creating intense and innovative glitch-pop masterpieces.
Listening to a new Hood album tends to be like hearing the band for the first time. Like its British countryside hometown of Leeds, Hood's aesthetic is bleak, autumnal, and rustic. The group's 2005 full-length release, OUTSIDE CLOSER, blends Hood's pastoral outsider ...
| | Lightning Bolt Hypermagic Mountain CD (2005)
Flood CD music
$11.09 Lightning Bolt's 2003 album Wonderful Rainbow just kept getting bigger and bigger, like a 16-ton amplifier falling out of the noon sky. Its bass tone squashed round heads into wrecked ellipses, and the drums chattered away as if on a chain drive. The album was the opposite of Excedrin, a tension headache in ten movements. Lightning Bolt have done it again with 2005's Hypermagic Mountain. It's hard to say this is accessible; besides, if you did say that, no one would hear it anyway. But bassist Brian Gibson and drummer/default vocalist Brian Chippendal build an addictive structure into the manic pulse of "Captain Caveman," and "Riffwraiths" -- musicians' biggest fear next to unreliable drummers -- sounds like a song's break extended to three explosive minutes. And while Chippendale's vocals on "Birdy" are a distracting non-factor, its rhythmic throb is more relentless than a carbon-arc strobe light with no off switch. None of this is melodic in the traditional sense; Wonderful Rainbow wasn't, either. But Lightning Bolt's music beckons from a more ...
| | Sparks Hello Young Lovers CD (2006)
Flood music CDs
$11.45 Ron and Russell Mael, aka Sparks, have been making some of the most confounding and incredibly enjoyable music of the past 30 years. HELLO YOUNG LOVERS (2006) stays true to Sparks' manic tradition and holds up against the band's classic 1970s albums. For newcomers, the easiest musical reference point for Sparks is Queen: both bands share a fondness for the operatic potential of rock and pop. Sparks' artistry, however, is in a world completely unto itself, and avoids rock clichés at every turn while somehow managing to embrace all of them. Take for example the opener, "Dick Around": with its synthesized orchestration giving way to a piano-driven pop bridge and a near-heavy-metal interlude that leads to a ...

Flood music CDs
$11.19 Boston's Coffin Lids offer up more of the punk-fueled garage rock ruckus that marked their 2004 debut on their second studio album, Round Midnight, and if there's an air of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" about this set, that might just be because the band has gotten better at what it does in the 18 months that separated the two sets without having to make a major ...

| | Jeff Bjorck Pure Piano Panoramas CD (2005)
Flood album
$15.95 THE MUSIC Jeff Bjorck's second CD, PURE PIANO PANORAMAS begins where his debut project PURE PIANO PORTRAITS ends. Many pieces on Jeff Bjorck's first CD reflect his love for the Appalachian woods and Catskill Mountains of his youth. Now, having lived the last decade in Southern California, he has turned to the desert and chaparral for inspiration. From the Joshua Trees of the Mojave Desert (portrayed on the CD cover) to towering thunderclouds hovering above parched earth, Jeff's new songs take the listener on a panoramic tour. These new pieces were all recorded in 2000. Most were composed over the previous four years, with two exceptions: Day Without A Sun was created in 1977, the year that Jeff lost his only uncle to cancer; Your Love Has Made Me Fly is a 1986 tribute to Sharon, Jeff's wife (and best friend) of ten years. Their first joint effort at songwriting, Sculptor of the Sky, reflects their shared amazement with the beauty of clouds. Several other pieces also convey personal themes. Jeff honors his grandmother, who almost lived to see her hundredth birthday and a new millennium, with Remembering Gramma. An avid hang glider pilot, Jeff's love of flight is manifested in Soaring Mesa Cliffs, which beckons the listener to rise high above the mundane into clear, stark, silent skies. As he does on his first CD, here Jeff surrounds his own compositions with original arrangements of two traditional hymns. He explains, Holy, Holy, Holy has long been a favorite, and it served as Sharon's and my wedding processional, so it is particularly special. As for O, The Deep, Deep Love of Jesus, I am continually overwhelmed by God's love, and this hymn expresses my sentiments well." Jeff's first CD has provided reassuring focus for mothers in delivery, peaceful rest when insomnia comes knocking, and elegant ambiance at intimate wedding receptions and dinner parties. He remarks, "It is my hope that PURE PIANO PANORAMAS will bring my listeners more of what they enjoy, emotional music with a classical feel that lifts them from the rat race and gently sets them down in a restful place, as far away from everyday chaos as possible."THE ARTIST As an artist, Jeff Bjorck believes music in its purest form is sometimes the closest thing to art. Not surprisingly, his solo acoustic piano compositions paint a gallery of musical images suitable for framing. These original works interweave delicacy with intensity, combine musical notes with the space between them, and create moving pictures that move the emotions. Dr. Bjorck is somewhat of an expert on emotions. As a clinical psychologist, researcher, and professor at Fuller Seminary's Graduate School of Psychology, his multifaceted vocation typifies his ongoing passion for a ...
