5 stars A Woman Wronged
The story of a woman whose reputation was compromised out of jealousy is not new to opera.And although the music is not the masterpiece of Otello, or even Lucia, this is an excellent staging and should be a part of any serious collection. Donizetti is superb.

Gaetano Donizetti - Pia De' Tolomei DVD

Not so different from the concise librettos of Roberto Devereux and Poliutio, the libretto of Pia de' Tolomei results a little more articulated, eloquent and detailed, perhaps influenced by the prevailing style of Felice Romani (especially when the two acts of the first version expanded into three). The text is clear, consistent and fluent, unlike the earlier, disjointed one written for Assedio di Calais. And above all the tale is direct, dramatic, truly romantic and cleverly balanced between a cloak-and-dagger novel and a theatrical work.
