Each individual title, or inning, is available separately; they are OUR GAME, SOMETHING LIKE A WAR, THE FAITH OF 50 MILLION PEOPLE, A NATIONAL HEIRLOOM, SHADOW BALL, THE NATIONAL PASTIME, THE CAPITAL OF BASEBALL, A WHOLE NEW BALLGAME, and HOME. Each set is a fascinating examination of the history of the game, told through the eyes of those who played it, those who watched it, those who wrote about it, and those who dreamed about playing it. Originally aired on PBS, September 18-22 and September 25-28, 1994.
"Baseball" is 18 hours, 27 minutes long, divided into nine segments, or "Innings." The set comes with collectible baseball cards.

A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Lover Come Back to Me." Quite possibly this is the definitive Ted Brown set to acquire; certainly it is highly recommended to lovers of straight-ahead jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

An excellent modern mainstream pianist who is a bit taken for granted, Rob Schneiderman was actually one of the better jazz pianists of the 1990s. On Back in Town, he plays standards but often with subtle surprises. For example, the ballad "Darn That Dream" is taken up-tempo, Jobim's "A Felicidade" is stripped of its bossa nova rhythms, "Chega de Saudade" starts out much slower than usual, and the second half of Sonny Rollins' "Paul's Pal" becomes unexpectedly humorous. While the other performances are a bit more conventional, they are no less colorful and swinging. Schneiderman, bassist Boris Kozlov, and drummer Jonathan Blake form a tight trio and often think as one, following each other closely while creating satisfying modern jazz. ~ Scott ...
