This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other. YoungBloodZ (Rap): J-Bo (rap vocals, turntables); Sean Paul (rap vocals). Additional personnel: T-Boz (vocals); Cutty, Daz, Jazze Pha, Akon, Lil Scrappy, Mannie Fresh, Young Buck, Ben Hated, Shawty Putt, Mr. Mo, Proverb (rap vocals). Dirty South duo Youngbloodz's sophomore album has more of the hard-hitting crunk tracks that characterized their 2002 debut. Production from the genre's acknowledged master, Lil Jon, on "Presidential," the album's lead-off single, sets a high watermark for the record with its woozy synth refrain and a pulsing, incantatory chorus. Youngbloodz call in a roster of other talented producers for the other tracks, and guest MCs Young Buck, Lil Scrappy, and Mannie Fresh help keep things lively on the mic. The rhymes cover all the usual thug topics: cars, weed, women, the rap game, and getting paid, so fans of the genre won't be thrown for any curves with this booming, hard-edged party album. Drankin' Patnaz, the 2002 YoungBloodZ album, arrived right in the midst of the initial crunk uprising, and it helped push that style into mass public consciousness in a major way, with the Lil Jon-produced "Damn!" breaking into the Top Five of Billboard's Hot 100 -- a noteworthy milestone at the time. But three years later, in 2005, "crunk" had become the new "bling-bling" -- a trendy rap style that proliferated at lightning speed, to the point where its sudden omnipresence reached the point of parody, and indeed, snarkier pop culture commentators were quick to lampoon it just as they had "bling-bling." Ev'rybody Know Me arrived around this time, in December 2005, and it pales in comparison to its predecessor. What a difference three years make! YoungBloodZ haven't changed much in those three years. They're still the same rambunctious Atlanta duo they were before -- witty, grimacing Dirty South rappers with a taste for cush and candy-paint cars, white Ts and white wheels, drank and stank. But while they sounded cutting edge in 2002, they sound middle of the pack in 2005, and that's despite working with many of the same producers as last time. Of course, there's a mammoth Lil Jon production here that stands head and shoulders above every other song on Ev'rybody Know Me: "Presidential." From the opening synth stab, it's obvious that this is straight from the lab of the King of Crunk. There's a lot that's amazing about this song, from how YoungBloodZ make "George Bush" seem like a dope name to drop ("What we smokin'?/That cush/Presidential sh*t/George Bush") to how Lil Jon's endlessly recycled production style remains powerful. But there are 15 other songs here, and none of them comes close to matching the appeal of "Presidential." Not even A-list producers such as Scott Storch, Jazze Pha, Mannie Fresh, or Mr. Collipark can conjure up a fresh song idea. Rather, each of these well-paid producers turns in a third-rate retread: Collipark's "It's Good" sounds like a "Wait (The Whisper Song)" remix, Fresh's "What tha Biz (If I)" sounds like a "And Then What" remix, and so on. The exception would be Storch's "Chop Chop," which does sound fairly unique; it just doesn't quite work as well as it should. Anyhow, there's not a lot of use in overexamining why Ev'rybody Know Me feels disappointing. In sum, it's a run-of-the-mill crunk album with a killer single, an album that doesn't come close to matching its relatively superb and much fresher predecessor. ~ Jason Birchmeier

$12.65 Musically, this exhilarating ride through the playful streets of Los Angeles proves no less a calling card for the city's lighthearted side than Randy Newman's "I Love L.A.." Aside from asserting his considerable abilities as a solo artist, composer and producer after a handful of years as a keyboardist with The Rippingtons, Portmann desired to create an innovative recording specifically designed both sonically and musically for the f reeway, where folks in the City of Angels spend so much of their time. The tunes are lively, spry and spirited, providing two morning to night, top down, wind in your face joyrides that perfectly capture both the cool, laid back aspects of beach life ("200 South Robertson," the vocal "Cruise Control," sung by former Hiroshima lead singer Machun) and the often frenetic pace of the palm lined streets ("California Spyder"). The pacing is perfectly balanced, and though there is an amazing number of all star performances, Portmann allows himself to emerge as leader by expanding his chops on plucky pieces like "It's My Turn." With guests like Steve Bailey, Jeff Kashiwa, Tony Morales and Steve Reid, there were indeed a slew of Ripps comparisons. His compositions are as accessible as Russ Freeman's, but Portmann's vision and often jazzy keyboard style carry him beyong the artistic bounds he had with the band. ~ Jonathan Widran
A best-kept secret in the business. Having quickly gained a considerable reputation as a talented producer, arranger, and musician for some of the biggest stars in music, Mark Portmann steps comfortably into the spotlight as a solo artist with his debut solo album, DRIVING BEVERLY HILLS. The album gives the Grammy-nominated arranger and accomplished keyboardist and opportunity to deliver his own rich, ...
