The Claudia Quintet utilize unusual rhythmic patterns, creative repetitions, and such instruments as accordion, vibes, and clarinet to create a dramatic set of music. As much a soundtrack for a nonexistent movie as it is a jazz set, the music on Semi-Formal is quite cinematic, moody, and thoroughly intriguing. Although some of the individual pieces could stand alone, this is very much a 13-song suite, with one selection leading logically if unpredictably to another. In a similar way, the individual musicians, although impressive by themselves, are most important being part of the group sound, adding to the wide variety of tonal colors. Semi-Formal, which will take time to fully appreciate, is well worthy of several listens. ~ Scott Yanow

Unknown Contributor Role: John Hollenbeck. The Wire (p.75) - "It's music that, in keeping with Cuneiform's devotion to jazz rock and other uncategorisable forms, breaks down boundaries. Lot of clever stuff and a leaven of humour..." Down Beat (p.80) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "The quintet's instrumental palette has never before been this expansive, with all of the players doubling and tripling on different instruments, and the scattered solos emerge in a satisfyingly organic fashion..." JazzTimes (p.85) - "Hollenbeck's gift for imaginative, finely woven orchestration couldn't be clearer, whether he's working with five pieces or 16." Semi-Formal album
$14.99 This second release from the Claudia Quintet (and their first on the Cuneiform label) not only offers Claudia's great blend of instrumental textures from tenor sax/clarinet, vibraphone, accordion, acoustic bass, drums, and percussion, but also provides a satisfying stroll among multiple musical genres. Drummer John Hollenbeck is the group's composer, and his clever pieces move effortlessly from funky chamber jazz to minimalism (both rhythmic and ambient), with some African elements and "new music" vocabulary thrown in for good measure. A good example of Hollenbeck's eclecticism (one of many) ...

| | Marc Ribot Spiritual Unity CD (2005)
Semi-Formal songs
$13.29 Albert Ayler compositions have been in Marc Ribot's book for many years, so it shouldn't really be a surprise that he put together a band to play Ayler tunes. However, when Ribot started playing Ayler songs he couldn't have dreamed that he'd be playing them with Henry Grimes, the original bass player on a number of Ayler's seminal mid-'60s recordings (Grimes walked away from music in 1967 and remained out of sight until 2002). Rounding out the group are Roy Campbell on trumpet and Chad Taylor on drums and percussion.
The album is called Spiritual Unity, but it's not a direct cover of Ayler's Spiritual Unity album. In fact, Ribot's band only tackles one song from that particular album, "Spirits." Actually, although they do play Ayler's music, the band's mission statement says it's ...
| | Ben Goldberg Door, The Hat, The Chair, The Fact CD (2006)
Semi-Formal album
$14.59 An intensely personal CD recorded only three days after the death of clarinetist Goldberg's inspiration and mentor, Steve Lacy, the music of The Door, the Hat, the Chair, the Fact is perhaps enhanced by such knowledge but nonetheless stands proudly on its own merits as a fine collection of thoughtful chamber jazz. Lacy's presence is felt not only through the inclusion of two of his compositions, "Blinks" and "Facts," but also in the other compositions in the program, largely Goldberg's, which are characterized by the mild dissonance and oblique, cerebral indirection of Lacy's best ...
| | Nels Cline New Monastery CD (2006)
Semi-Formal CD music
$14.59 If Otomo Yoshihide can interpret Eric Dolphy and Marc Ribot can do Albert Ayler, then why not Nels Cline doing Andrew Hill -- who is still alive and creating marvelously, with his recordings in the current century clear evidence of this. As Cline describes his approach in the liner notes, this most certainly is not a tribute record or an attempt to completely re-create Hill's music. The transcriptions came from recordings rather than notated sources. He also writes that the bandmembers -- like many of Hill's ensembles -- do not play on changes (in "Dedication" and the medley "Yokada Yokada/The Rumproller" -- a bit of humor tossed in -- they do, but nowhere else). The band includes Cline on guitars, Ben Goldberg on clarinets, Bobby ...
