(68 Customer Reviews)
Atlanta collective D4L released their debut, DOWN FOR LIFE, in 2005. The tracks are built around heavily stripped-down electro beats and wiry synth lines, giving the set a gritty, lo-fi sound. And while DL4 doesn't necessarily display the mic technique of fellow Atlanta artists like Outkast and Goodie Mob, what they lack in agility they make up for in passionate delivery, as there are plenty of hard-hitting, adrenaline-charged cadences throughout. While perhaps not the very best the Dirty South has to offer, D4L make an appropriate soundtrack for bouncing the jeep on a ride through A-Town.

there should be a "0" stars I'll tell you this, and I'm serious when I say, this kind of stuff D-O-E-S kill whatever you wanna call it-- rap or hip-hop. Listen, most people dont seem to realize, hip-hop started out as aggressive, all about battling, and contesting. and this has been the foundation of hip-hop music that is keeping artists like this out of the ghetto. And they repay the very culture of hip-hop by their mockery of our very artform. This is hip-hop blackface, plain and simple. And to make excuses and cop-out comments like "oh, this album was made to smoke out to, don't criticize them", is the main reason why this kind of trash dominates the airwaves. This b.s. sends a message to aspiring rappers like "see, you dont have to be skillful to get paid in the rap game look at D4L". If you don't want to be criticized or dont want to see these clowns get criticized they should market this sh*t to another crowd, because as long as they are on the same shelves with the Nas' and The Game's and Dr. Dre's they will get clowned. Because people who know what good hip-hop is will eject these fools every time...thanks 4 listening Submitted by crysta.brown7803 (KCMO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

pure hot mess If you think this album is hot, then you should be shot. Seriously. This is pure embaressment to real hip hop. How can this mess see the light of day? So please, do NOT waste your money or time on this crap. For the first time in history, D4L and K-Fed did the impossible...give Vanilla Ice street cred. Yup. It's that atrocious. Down For Life
$10.09 "Get You Right," a smooth throwback ballad from Miami outfit Pretty Ricky's debut, BLUESTARS, features a hardcore rap that name-checks 1990s groups H-Town and Jodeci. While the four youthful brothers of Pretty Ricky were likely in grade school when these artists had their hits, it's a fitting reference; the quartet's sound reveals an innate feel for the New Jack Swing sound of that time. This approach is evident ...
| | Ying Yang Twins United State Of Atlanta CD (2005)
Down For Life
$14.15 Like Outkast, the Ying Yang Twins are progenitors of southern hip-hop that's a mix of gangsta rap, party jams, and jittery beats, and on UNITED STATE OF ATLANTA the Ying Yang Twins approach the game like a house party thrown in a recording studio. For starters, the wide variety of guests popping up throughout this 70-minute-plus project adds a feeling of randomness, recklessness, and fun. Neo-soul crooner Anthony Hamilton provides some honeyed vocals on the gospel-flavored "Long Time," and Maroon 5's Adam Levine holds his own on the electro-funk of "Live Again," with its nod to the travails of exotic dancers. There's also plenty of support from Dirty South brethren such as Mike Jones & Mr. Collipark (on "Badd"), and tough gal Jacki-O (on the DMX-flavored "Hoes"). The interspersed skits comment on a range of topics: "We at War" touches ...
