Purchase Darkness & Light CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Shakira She Wolf CD (2009)
Darkness & Light album
$11.18 Last time around, Shakira touched upon so many styles she couldn't be contained on one album, splitting Oral Fixation in two. This time, she focuses on one sound only: a pulsating electro-disco that crosses all boundaries and welcomes all nationalities. Such concentration behooves Shakira, freeing her to release her inner She Wolf, a wild wacko who's as coo coo as she is carnal. And for as sexy as Shakira is -- crucially, her music is sexy too -- what really gives She Wolf its bite is her inspired nuttiness, how she laments that Matt Damon's not meant for her, and wishes her ex-lover and his new girl a horrible vacation where the room smells and the toilet doesn't flush. "Darling, it is no joke, this is lycanthropy," she sings on the title track with no small trace of humor, and this blend of cheerful weirdness and sick beats -- often supplied by the Neptunes, delivering tough, sensual rhythms in a way they haven't in a long time, but also John Hill and Wyclef Jean -- is giddily addicting, a celebration of all the strange sensuality that comes out at night. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Luther Vandross This Is Christmas CD (1995)
Darkness & Light CD music
$6.55 This stellar 1995 Christmas album is not your typical release of holiday standards. In fact, Luther helped pen most of the songs on this album. His originals include the excellent "With a Christmas Heart," "This Is Christmas," and "A Kiss for Christmas." But for those with an allegiance to the standards, "My Favorite Things" and "O' Come All Ye Faithful" are duly included among these 10 lovely tracks. Well-known bassist/arranger/producer Marcus Miller plays on some of the tracks, while well-coifed '80s rock balladeer Richard Marx co-wrote "Every Year, Every Christmas." For R&B fans, it's hard to do much better ...

| | Michael Jackson Dangerous CD (1991) Remastered; Special Edition
Darkness & Light songs
$7.59 Principally recorded at Record One Studios & Larrabee Studios, Los Angeles, California. Originally released on Epic/Sony (45400).
Digitally remastered by Bernie Grundman (Bernie Grundman Mastering, Los Angeles, California).
After a lengthy gap of nearly five years, Jackson had to pull something out of the bag. BAD was, after all, a difficult act to follow, and the press were trying to prove he was bonkers. This was a pretty decent attempt and fell in with the hard dance beat of the early 90s. "Heal The World" was much like the old melodic Jackson, and it became a major hit. "Black Or White" was the best of the rest, a well-constructed song in which he attempted to repeat "Ebony And Ivory" in the context of 90s dance music.
Despite the success of Bad, it was hard not to view it as a bit of a letdown, since it presented a cleaner, colder, calculated version of ...

| | Anthony Braxton Three Compositions Of New Jazz CD (1969)
Darkness & Light songs
$9.99 Recorded in two sessions in the fractious spring of 1968, Anthony Braxton's debut album as a leader has, on the surface, little in common with the fierce political and racial strife that was exploding across North America--not least in Braxton's hometown of Chicago--and Europe at the time. This is not angry music, and the philosophically oriented Braxton never lapsed into mere rhetoric. Yet THREE COMPOSITIONS OF NEW JAZZ is very much an album of its time. Saxophonist and composer Braxton, a founding member of the stalwart Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the cerebral Chicago-based answer to New York's explosive free-jazz scene, created three challenging ...

$42.05 | | Hania Yiska To Die During Spring CD (2009)
Darkness & Light songs
$8.39 Hania Yiska - Is his own imaginary friend, and this album manifests that in a way that falling in love with the sun is normal. Funky, fresh, and mixed with cream vs. peanut butter.Song/record Review-By SteveHania YiskaHania Yiska, also known as Jibah Yiska and originally born Jeffrey Hull in Rochester NY, supplies us with music from a unique perspective. The briefest of foray's into Jeff's biography reveals that Jeff is working on a strict time-scale. He's now 27 and his doctors have told him he will be deaf at 30, having had ear-surgery eight times, including reconstruction of the ear-drum from skin on his head. So with his hearing at about 70%, Jeff has boxed each of his musical outings into a different name-space and one of these is Hania Yiska. 'Without You' starts off with looped beats and a simple bass line, with a simple keyboard supplying a counter to the bass. This means there's a ton of space for the vocal, which cracks over emotive lyrics that feel minutes old in this down-beat outpouring of the heart. This ...
