4 stars New sounds from Makoto Ozone, The Trio
I have all of Makoto Ozone's recordings starting with his first from the early 80's. On this outing, Ozone is not the only composer, letting the other group members contribute. Also, Ozone uses Electronic keyboards on many tracks and the bassist uses electric bass. This gives these tracks a wonderful texture of sound of which is organic with the compsitions, so the sound is never never gimmicky or sold-out commercial sounding. This use of a variety of composers and instruments make for a wonderful flowing, enjoyable CD.

XXL was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. "Hunting Wabbits" was nominated for Best Instrumental Composition. "Comes Love" was nominated for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists. Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band is a modern big band which successfully blends elements of jazz and rock. Goodwin, who serves as keyboardist, composer, arranger and conductor, has created music that proves to be consistently catchy to the listener and challenging to his musicians. The leader obviously loves a good laugh. The playful staccato brass and reeds are the centerpiece of "Hunting Wabbits" before it transforms into a brisk bluesy vehicle. Voted the number two big band playing in the mid-'00s by a Jazz Times Reader's Poll, the popular, Grammy nominated, L.A.-based ensemble the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra celebrated 20 years of maintaining and expanding the big band jazz tradition in 2005. As the adage goes, the live setting is where the spirit of jazz really happens, and this recording, Live at MCG -- recorded over a four-day "residency" at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh in May 2004 -- perfectly captures Clayton-Hamilton's spontaneous spirit. Recorded between 1976 & 1993. Includes liner notes by Simon Jeffes. The Penguin Cafe Orchestra was one of those delightfully unclassifiable groups. Not really classical, not really jazz; sort of minimalist, and decidedly not new age (despite their usual classification), the PCO blended the first three of those ingredients into a quirky, beautiful, and timeless music that sounds like no one else. Lots of strings, piano, harmonium, bass, and ukuleles are the main instruments, and the music they produce is pretty, humorous, and utterly unique. Preludes, Airs & Yodels is a collection (one couldn't really use the term "Greatest Hits" for the PCO) that features many of their best-loved tunes like the "Penguin Cafe Single," "Air ŕ Danser," and "Telephone and Rubber Band" (What? No "Ecstasy of Dancing Fleas?"). "Music for a Found Harmonium" actually appears three times: the original version by the PCO, a version by the traditional Irish band Patrick Street, and an electronicized version whipped up by pioneering electronica act the Orb.
