Personnel: Ginuwine (vocals); Jadakiss, Knight (rap vocals). Ginuwine's silky, R&B-inflected hip-hop is further smoothed out on 2005's BACK II DA BASICS. Unlike some of his previous releases, BACK II DA BASICS favors ballads and slow jams first and foremost. Sultry tunes like "When We Make Love" and "Want U To Be" dominate, but even more uptempo tracks like "Secrets" have a gentle, undulating vibe that insinuates its way into the listener's hips. Ginuwine is in fine voice throughout, and crisp, detail-rich production (from the artist himself) adds luster to this collection of simmering bedroom tracks. Ginuwine's initial impact was also his greatest. Rather than gradually spin out with albums that steadily diminish creatively and commercially, he has put together a series of releases strong enough to maintain his presence on radio. Back II da Basics, his fifth album in ten years, offers roughly the same mixture of romantic subject matter heard before, but it shows him growing out of club tracks and further into lush ballads and gentle mid-tempo material. Without the club tracks, Back II da Basics would be an even better, bolder, more mature release. Even "Secrets," the best of the upbeat tracks, is nearly ruined by producer Jazze Pha's intrusive vocals, which rub against Ginuwine's voice in the same way that Bobby Byrd would be a bad match for Ronald Isley. On the other side, Ginuwine has never done anything as understated or idyllic as "Want U to Be," which glides by with shades of Michael Jackson's "I Can't Help It" -- much more so than Fabolous' "I Can't Help It"-sampling hit "Baby." On the heartbroken "Glaze in My Eye," he falls into a starry production from Trackmasters' Poke and Tone with a perfectly measured grace and humility not heard on either Ginuwine...The Bachelor or 100% Ginuwine. This proves that he doesn't need to be bumptious -- as with "Pony" or "In Those Jeans" -- to be a force. ~ Andy KellmanVibe (p.215) - 3 discs out of 5 - "His fifth release, BACK II DA BASICS - which builds on his silky vocals while keeping the sexual innuendo intact - proves he's slowly but surely growing up." Ummm... Genuwine is not even my favorit singer but this album was exclusive. People say it does not sound like his other albums...ok, since when did some one want all of their albums to sound alike. Glaze in My Eye and Far Away are some of the most well put together tracks I've heard. G is kind of an older singer, in my eyes he's doing well for staying up to date. I do music; listen to sounds, notes and everything... he's still one of R&B's greatest composers. Judging from what these "CD Universe Critics are leaving in these notes...I guess everyone just doesn't REALLY know about music.

Disappointed I bought, I sat, I listened and I was left disappointed. I expected his hiatus from the industry to come back strong with this album but surely, back 2 the basics took me back to another unfortunate album. These artists need to save R+B, not help it fail. I hope he takes a longer hiatus to think on how he could return with an album like 100% because this album was less than a hundred.
