| | Steve Howe Homebrew 3 CD Steve Howe Discography of CDs
Following in the footsteps of its preceding two editions, Steve Howe's Homebrew 3 collects previously unheard demos from the renowned guitarist of Yes, Asia, and GTR (not to mention Anderson-Bruford-Wakeman-Howe). As with the previous Homebrew releases, the tunes are primarily stripped down, and prominently feature Howe's guitar work. Included are the rapid-fire guitar riffing of the album opener, "Turbulence," songs you'd expect to hear if you could actually visit the sci-fi landscapes of Roger Dean's paintings (especially "Pyramidology"), and the stark acoustic guitar/voice ditty "Between Your Smiles." While it contains quite a few interesting musical bits, Homebrew 3 is obviously aimed exclusively at hardcore Yes and Howe fans. ~ Greg Prato

$13.14 Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral ...
| | Youssou N'Dour Lion CD (1989)
Homebrew 3
$10.49 Youssou N'Dour's third album, released in 1989, was the one that pushed him into the international limelight. Though N'Dour would perfectly blend commercial accessibility with the sounds of his native Senegal on his follow-up release, SET, LION sows the seeds for that fusion with its propulsive drumming and smooth, palatable production.
While critics may occasionally accuse N'Dour of watering down his original African sound, the constant here, as with all of N'Dour's albums, is his astonishing, soaring tenor. Rough-hewn, but capable of great, surging flights, N'Dour's voice always seems to be on its own spiritual quest, a quality that underscores the sacred feel of much of his music. He is in excellent voice on LION, particularly on the lovely duet with Peter Gabriel, "Shaking the Tree," making the album as fine an introduction to his talents as any. Additionally, a number of LION's songs are rooted in mbalax, a dense, polyrhythmic African dance beat (see the rolling groove of "The Truth"), making the album quite exciting and distinguishing it from the artist's later, more pop-oriented releases.
Out of print in the U.S.! Originally released in 1989, The Lion is considered the Senegalese singers breakthrough album. There are albums by World artists that are geared for a commercial market, but The Lion is something else entirely. It is an album that the commercial market wholeheartedly embraced ...
| | Chenille Sisters Mama, I Wanna Make Rhythm CD (1991)
Homebrew 3
$13.95 After a children's album (1-2-3 for Kids), the Chenille Sisters return with the third album for grownups, Mama, I Wanna Make Rhythm, and with the group's usual mixture of originals and covers, novelties and more serious fare, it adds more musical diversity (along with greater instrumentation), from the '20s/'30s swing sound of several tunes to rock & roll and a cappella singing. All three of the singers write, often in a comic vein, with Connie Huber contributing "Sally's Advice," a reflection on how sparks are supposed to fly on a couple's 13th date (happily, this time they do); Cheryl Dawdy, in the a cappella number "Is It True, Albert?" pondering whether Albert Einstein stole the theory of relativity from his wife; Grace Morand declaring, "I Am a Can of Tuna" (a can that goes through the garbage); and all three combining for a rocking tribute to "Big Hair" (in the tradition of "Girl Shoes" from At Home with the Chenille Sisters), among other songs. The trio together also provide a new "English translation" (actually, parody lyrics) to "La Bamba," turning Ritchie Valens' appropriation of an old Mexican dance tune into a diatribe from "yo' mama," who says things like, "So, why aren't you married?" Funny as that ...

$7.99 Solo viola axe and silver toned frequency drift for the vibration of the air surrounding the aural coils, electrically. Both of them, vibrated in phase pulses sometimes symmetrical, and other times it's life burning to pour out. Its yam yad much picked over when found in the company of a rough legged hawk. It's a barbershop quartet dedicated to performing baroque slink slop in concordance with thermoelectric properties, and when they are hot, they are hot. It's a theoretical cure for chronic coryza, and while the predicament is allieviated, the geocephalo-cotex is also direly affected, causing an initiative of obsessive vision: geological and musical time frames became supercooled and thus glacially motivated. Slow in form but powered and etched by sunshine continually, ...
