Artist, actor, musician, and -- believe it or not -- children's author Harland Williams can definitely be Har-Larious, but it takes awhile for him to get there on his Comedy Central debut. He's simply telling jokes at the beginning of this St. Louis-sourced show and they're hit or miss, mostly hit but sometimes uncomfortably miss. He seems tripped-up by the non-reaction some of his jokes receive, but after a couple hit the target, he relaxes and lets loose his inner Harland. This means stringing together nonsensical words to explain improbable situations or interacting with the audience in an acerbic way that suggests Don Rickles on acid. The fact that the whole front row seems to work at the same Arbys sets Williams off on a funny bit that displays his underexposed skills at improv. His bit on the "Al Quedas" attacking buildings with blimps is very funny, but like a whole lot of Har-Larious, seeing the chin-less wonder deliver it would be even better. Mitch Hedberg and Dane Cook got the deluxe treatment from Comedy Central with loaded CD/DVD combos being released before Williams' mere CD. It's a shame, since the audience's enthusiastic laughter at what are just pauses on-disc must mean the rubbery one is doing the facial contortions and awkward movements that play no small part in his rise to cult fame. As it is, Har-Larious is beneficial to the fan since his earlier, self-released albums are hard to come by, but unfortunately, this isn't the breakthrough package it could have been. ~ David Jeffries

| | Mr. Scarface Is Back CD (1991) Chop
Har-Larious album
$13.89 The Geto Boys' classic single, "Mind Playing Tricks on Me," was all over MTV and the airwaves when Scarface released his first solo album in the fall of 1991, billed as Scarface of the Geto Boys. Although it didn't see anything close to the crossover success that his group's albums had achieved, MR. SCARFACE IS BACK nevertheless was hugely popular in the south, especially in his native Houston, and garnered respect throughout the national hip-hop community. It proved without a doubt who was the most talented of the Geto Boys; his frank depictions of crime, drugs, and street life, delivered with an effortless flow, easily held their own against the L.A. gangstas of the time. In fact, Scarface sounds not unlike a young Ice Cube, especially when he furthers the story of "Tricks on Me"'s paranoid pessimist in "Diary of a Madman." In its own homegrown way, MR. SCARFACE IS BACK is as essential as any classic of the gangsta era.
Fresh from the success of "Mind Playing Tricks on Me," his breakthrough hit with the Geto Boys, Scarface continued his streak of excellence with his exceptionally creative solo debut, Mr. Scarface Is Back. One of the first genuine masterpieces of the gangsta era, the album draws heavily from the densely layered sample-scapes of the Bomb Squad and the provocative ghetto-storytelling of Ice Cube. What sets Scarface apart from his New York and Compton peers, though, is his deep-Texas Houston locale, where coke and crime are daily operations. Scarface exploits this reality shockingly and cinematically throughout Mr. Scarface Is Back, beginning with the album-opening Al Pacino samples ("All I have in this world..."). From there, Scarface makes an explosive entry ("Ahh yeah, hah/Mr. Scarface is back in the motherf*ckin' house once again!") and tremors through one rhyme after another about the ins and outs of the gangsta life in a loose narrative sequence: drug dealing gone well ("Mr. Scarface"), the joy of recreational sex ("The Pimp"), heedless murder ("Born Killer"), mental unsoundness ("Murder by Reason ...
| | Circus Maximus First Chapter CD (2005)
Har-Larious CD music
$14.29 The easy -- call it the cop-out -- description of Norway's Circus Maximus would be to say that they essentially offer accomplished, melodic prog metal in the Dream Theater vein, only delivered with a distinctly European aesthetic. Of course things are never so simple when discussing the dense and complex array of sounds necessary for sculpting this sort of music; and, therefore, the presence of DT's soaring vocals, heroic guitars, aggressive synthesizers, and a busy rhythm section merely begin to paint the full picture. There's much more here than initially meets the ears: first and foremost being Circus Maximus' clear appreciation of more straightforward AOR and hard rock songwriting hallmarks, which, for all of the band's fleet-fingered displays, ultimately helps sharpen their songwriting. As such, standout tracks like "Sin," "Alive," and "The Prophecy" capture a perfect balance of hooks and shocks, while the lone power ballad, "Silence From Angels Above," fairs somewhat poorly for going a bit over the top -- though that too is of course to be expected. Excepting the instrumental "Biosfear," full-fledged ...
