This short, atmospheric collection of Gothic country rock songs from the Austin-based band of world-weary neo-slackers is an added extra of sorts to their well-received 2005 album, BLACK SHEEP BOY. APPENDIX's broad, imaginative production flourishes include agreeable smatterings of Mellotron, a string section, and a pretty sounding toy piano. The mood here remains as desolate and poetic as on its predecessor, and the band rocks, though sparingly.
Okkervil River: Will Sheff (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Jonathan Meiburg, Brian Cassidy (vocals); Chris Henrich (pedal steel guitar); Scott Brackett (trumpet, tambourine, hand claps); Howard Draper, Zachary Thomas, Patrick Pestorious (bass guitar); Travis Nelsen (drums); Seth Warren (electronics).
Additional personnel: Amy Annelle (vocals); Elaine Barber (harp); Jennifer Bourianoff (violin); Sara Driver (viola); Jonathan Dexter, Carrie Miller (cello); Alice Spencer (Mellotron); Brian Beattie (bass instrument).

Black Sheep Boy Appendix
$11.99 Down the River of Golden Dreams is the record Okkervil River has been threatening to make since its 2000 issue, Stars Too Small to Use. Songwriter Will Sheff has turned out his nicest batch of tunes here and reined in his voice just enough to communicate his ideas without pushing too hard, while simultaneously keeping the urgency and emotive qualities he showcased on the predecessor to this record, Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See. Because of this, Down the River of Golden Dreams is easily the group's most cohesive record to date, and solidifies Okkervil River as a band worthy of scrutiny. The fluidity of Sheff's thoughtful lyrics align with his ability to play with tension, which ...

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Black Sheep Boy Appendix
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury ...
| | Decemberists Picaresque CD (2005)
Black Sheep Boy Appendix
$13.39 The Decemberists' third full-length release takes the fanciful lyrical subjects and defiantly non-rock musical tendencies of CASTAWAYS AND CUT-OUTS and HER MAJESTY THE DECEMBERISTS and infuses them with the more muscular and electric sound of the 2003 mini-concept album, THE TAIN. The combination provides singer/songwriter Colin Meloy and crew with their first true masterpiece, an album that not only fulfills, but exceeds, the promise of their earlier records.
Meloy's pet obsessions with historical romance and ...
| | Okkervil River Black Sheep Boy CD (2005)
Black Sheep Boy Appendix
$10.15 Okkervil River continue to break the glass between messy nerves and orchestrated elegance on their fourth full-length, Black Sheep Boy, titled after the lovely song penned by Tim Hardin with which the band opens the record. However, their take on the song feels a bit rushed and uneventful, which knocks the tender breath from the lyrics and presents a clumsy start. Opening the record this way is the singular yet major complaint of the album, ironically pushing "Black Sheep Boy," the intended centerpiece, to the outskirts of the album's overall feel. Thankfully, the song spans only a short minute, so when "For Real" gently slips into motion, then cracks with a surprise beating of guitar stabs, that's when the confident ...
