| | Chris Brown Graffiti CD (2009)
Northern Soul album
$11.18 Most of Graffiti is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads, as well as a couple relatively lighthearted Europop numbers. A handful of songs deal with his relationship with Rihanna, as well as the fallout from his assault of her. ~ Andy Kellman
Most of Graffiti -- that is, the songs that do not detail what ex-girlfriend Rihanna and the rest of the world have done to him -- is a natural progression for Chris Brown. Like many young cred-seeking male singers who have just exited their teenage years, Brown clumsily emphasizes womanizing and hedonism and balances it out with a couple clean and empty ballads. Out of this portion of the album, only a couple songs leave a lasting impression, and when they do, the silly things that come out of Brown's mouth tend to be the reason; take "As stingy as you are, I think you ready," part of "Take My Time"'s chorus and hopefully no woman's idea of an effective bedroom line. A two-track patch of gloopy and gawky Europop, where he's on slightly better behavior, is at least more tolerable than the inane chest-puffing, but nothing comes close to the big singles from Brown's first two releases. The rest of this album could not have been voiced by anyone but a brat who pleaded guilty to the felonious assault of his pop star girlfriend, one who considers himself a victim. On "Famous Girl," sonically sprightly but otherwise acidic and full of contradictions, Brown cries foul at being cheated upon ...
| | Michael Jackson Thriller CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Special Edition
Northern Soul CD music
$5.99 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who can resist the 'dada dada da da da') or the 'whoo whoo' of 'Billie Jean'. It's all too good.
Principally recorded at Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California.

Personnel includes: Michael Jackson (vocals, percussion); Paul McCartney (vocals); Vincent ...

| | Eve-Olution CD (2002)
Northern Soul songs
$9.79 "Satisfaction" was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Female Rap Solo Performance.
With the help of the Ruff Ryders crew, Philadelphia rapper EVE rocked the hip-hop world straight out of the gate with her debut album and kept up the momentum with follow-up release SCORPION. Third outing EVE-OLUTION shows no signs of letting up. Produced by such hot studio rats as Swizz Beatz and Irv Gotti, and featuring high-profile guests like Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, and Jadakiss, this is obviously an elaborate, big-budget affair. However, Eve's reputation was made in large part on her ability to avoid vacuous lifestyle trappings in favor of an honest, proud representation of modern urban womanhood. That ethos stands her in good stead here. While such tracks as "Gangsta Lovin'" don't exactly bespeak a complex sociological aesthetic, EVE-OLUTION as a whole presents Eve as entirely more down-to-earth and just plain believable than many of her peers.
Having proved herself with 2001's rough and tough Scorpion, Eve changed direction slightly for Eve-Olution. The focus here is less hip-hop and more contemporary R&B, with fewer rappers invited as guests -- they appear on only two tracks, "Hey Y'All" features Snoop Dogg and Nate Dogg and the Scorpion sequel "Double R What" features Jadakiss and Styles. After the intro, Eve focuses squarely on neo-soul, but doesn't contribute much to the style; "What" (with Truth Hurts) and "Gangsta Lovin'" (with Alicia Keys), are surprisingly mediocre, with the guests vamping over bland choruses and Eve contributing only a few good rhymes. Elsewhere, the productions keep the groove going, but not much else: definitely a surprise, considering the beatheads behind the boards (Irv Gotti, Dr. Dre, Swizz Beatz, Poke & Tone) don't get much hotter. ("Irresistible Chick," one of the few keepers, features a smooth Irv Gotti production that's moving almost as fast as Eve's fluid raps.) There are a few OK tough-love tracks along the lines of Scorpion's "You Had Me, You Lost Me" and "You Ain't Gettin' None," and a nod to her Ruff Ryders past with "Ryde Away," but Eve-Olution can't offer as much as either of her first two solid LPs. [The CD was also released with bonus tracks.] ~ John Bush
