Fates Warning - Live In Athens Movie Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews If you like Fates Warning or prog-metal, get it! For budget reasons, I guess, the video of this DVD recording is bit primitive, if compaired to the last Dream Theater DVD, for instance, sounding like an edition of a great audience or side stage bootlegs at a not large venue. On the other hand, this simplicity carries all the honesty this pioneer american prog-metal band has always primed for and is responsible for capturing all the greek crowd big and raw enthusiasm during the songs.
Performance wise, it's a Fates Warning gem. As usual, all the band's main tracks are perfectly played, with classic guitarist Frank Aresti back, the correct helping drumsticks of Spock's Beard Nick DiVirgilio, as well as honorary member Joey Vera always gets the crowd going while plays his bass lines. As special guest, Kevin Moore doesn't get much spotlight, but shines during "Still Remains".
Although coitaining Mike Portnoy behind the drumkit on two songs on a dutch festival in 2005, the extras aren't much more than that. No interviews and just a simple making of, with some live performances recorded by a local bulgarian TV with one or other band talk in between. Submitted by Thiago Z. yeeeeeeha everything is fine and great in this live dvd but I gave it 3 stars because of the direction , I mean I hate it when they show u the rythem guitarist while the other guitarist is playing the solo , and most of the show is covering the vocalist only
but the sound and the performance of the band are really greaaaaaaaaat . Submitted by a_j_m80 (Saudi Arabia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Finally! Finally... The live show that this long-time Fates Warning fan has been waiting for! A nice mix of both classics and new material... with excellent sound quality. Jim Matheos and Frank Aresti work together like they'd never stopped.
The camera work is a little "enthusiastic" in a couple of places. It's more funny than distracting, though.

Just so you should know I read an interview with Ray done by a Greek interviewer that was done 30 minutes before the show. Apparently Ray was sick and couldn't really even speak but he said that he would do his best because he could kind of sing. I am buying the DVD now, but I think his illness affected his voice. Unfortunate, but I've seen them live enough to know how good he really is. Even with the band Redemption he is great. Submitted by Eric (Houston, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Fates Warning Live is Magic Fates Warning is one of my favorite bands. There is more talent in this band then most that are out there. You never know what to expect and the songs are always awesome.
In this live dvd you see the magic that Jim and co present playing classics such as Quietus,Nothing Left to Say,The Eleventh Hour, and Point of View.New songs like Simple Human and Heal Me offer fresh ideas leaving you wanting more and more.
I was truely impressed with Still Remains and glad to see Kevin Moore playing with them for this tune.
The band as a whole are great live.
Ray's voice isnt as strong as in earlier days but he knows how to work it and i was impressed. He also is great with a crowd which is crucial to any band.Jim Matheos was awesome. His songwriting and playing are top notch.Bassist Joey Vera is among the best.I am glad to see that Frank Aresti has been on back on their last few tours. He is nothing short of amazing with his playing and has a good voice.Drummer Nick D' Virilio does a slendid job playing the the very intricate parts most bands don't have in songs or in a drummer.
All and all this dvd rocks and the crowd was really into the performance.I only wished the camera would have been more on Jim and Frank during their solos. Also hope this band would be more well known for they truley deserve it.My life is some much happier eing a Fates Warning Fan.
