| If you like Fates Warning or prog-metal, get it! Fates Warning - Live in Athens film For budget reasons, I guess, the video of this DVD recording is bit primitive, if compaired to the last Dream Theater DVD, for instance, sounding like an edition of a great audience or side stage bootlegs at a not large venue. | yeeeeeeha Fates Warning - Live in Athens review everything is fine and great in this live dvd but I gave it 3 stars because of the direction , I mean I hate it when they show u the rythem guitarist while the other guitarist is playing the solo , and most of the show is covering the vocalist only but the sound and the performance of the band are really greaaaaaaaaat. Dream Theater Octavarium CD (2005)
Fates Warning - Live in Athens video As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed by a footnote nod to Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on vocal-based, song-oriented material ("I Walk Beside You," "The Answer Lies Within"); much in the spirit of AWAKE and their breakthrough album IMAGES AND WORDS. "Sacrificed Sons" captures the heartbreak of the 9/11 tragedy, while the grandiose title track showcases a melodic, Styx-inspired keyboard solo by Jordan Rudess (better known for a blisteringly frenetic style). Twenty years since their inception, Dream Theater prevails as the benchmark of modern prog metal.

Steve G3 ( Vai / Joe Satriani / John ) Petrucci G3 - Live in Tokyo DVD (2005)
Fates Warning - Live in Athens film G3, a guitar supergroup that features top-tier shredders Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, and John Petrucci, is a guitar-lover's dream come true. The band's usual high energy is cranked up even higher on this live Tokyo date, and the amount of heavy riffing and blistering leads throughout the set is mightily ferocious. Petrucci, who rose to prominence in the progressive metal band Dream Theater, distinguishes himself here, and proves that his six-string skills are on par with revered axe-slinging of Vai and Satriani. In addition to some extended jams, there are covers of classic, guitar-defining rock songs (Deep Purple's "Smoke On the Water" and Jimi Hendrix's "Foxey Lady," among them) that add a dash of fun to the jaw-dropping pyrotechnics on offer.
This DVD features the trio of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and John Petrucci of Dream Theater, performing live on May 8, 2005 at the International Forum in Tokyo. Also included are show highlights, 5.1 sound, behind-the-scenes at the soundcheck, and bios.

FWX CD (2004)
Fates Warning - Live in Athens review FWX is a milestone for Fates Warning, marking 20 years since the band's debut, NIGHT ON BROCKEN. The album signals the end of one era, as departing drummer Mark Zonder's last with the group, and the beginning of another, as Fates make their first foray into producing their own records. While often compared to their prog-metal peers, Fates Warning are far less technical in their approach. What makes them progressive, and consistently sets them apart, is the lush mood and atmosphere they create. On FWX, their 10th studio album, the emotional tapestry of the group's songwriting carries a subtext of melancholy, personal reflection.
"Left Here" is close kin to the band's early-to-mid 1990s sound, while much of FWX ("Simple Human" and "Wish," especially) carries the aggressive touch established on DISCONNECTED (2000) and A PLEASANT SHADE OF GRAY (1998). "River Wide Ocean Deep" matches singer Ray Alder at his brooding best with a sampled vocal loop, yielding a haunting East Indian vibe. One of FWX's highlights, "Another Perfect Day," exhibits inspiring creative might and sums up the essence of the band's sound more effectively than ever before.
