Okotanpekono Majo CD music
$8.99 Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears) is a collaborative effort between the octogenarian Cuban piano master Bebo Valdés and the reigning Spanish flamenco cantador, Dieguito El Cigala. Recorded for Fernando Trueba and Nat Chediak's Calle 54 label, the sessions took place in Madrid between September and December 2002. Maestro Valdés (born in 1918), the father of the jazz pianist Chucho, has a long history as an innovator in Cuban music. He recorded the first Afro-Cuban jazz session in 1952, and was a tutor to the great bandleader Beny Moré, writing early charts for him. Valdés is also a world-class arranger. Dieguito El Cigala was born in 1960, and has become the undisputed king of Spain's flamenco singers. This recording features nine tracks that meld ...

| | Music Of Indonesia, Vol. 17: Kalimantan: Dayak Ritual And Festival Music CD (1998)
Okotanpekono Majo music CDs
$14.65 This volume returns to the Indonesian portion of Borneo, Kalimantan, scene of the string music sampled on volume 13. There are no strings here, but rather a grab bag of 24 short selections from gong and struck bamboo ensembles, as well as vocal music from seven different ethnic groups, all from within the large population known as Dayak. The Dayak are the mostly non-Muslim peoples who live in the island's mountainous interior. A lush, polyphonic, recreational vocal piece from East Kalimantan sets the tone. It's a song for Christian holidays and presents a soothing combination of local melody and Western harmony.
Three "melodic" gong ensemble pieces from the Upper Jelai River follow. They are tuneful, unusually rhythmic, and in one case, downright funky. Then, from the same region, come four examples of utterly unique struck-bamboo ensemble music. The sound known as senggayung is performed using fresh, green bamboo stalks that are discarded after the performance. All of the musicians play in rhythmic unison -- impressive, considering how irregular the rhythms are -- but using differently pitched sounds. The result is a fat, rich sound that could only be produced by many tubes banging together at the same time. The music accompanies an agricultural ritual that comes every three or four years when many types of fruit become ripe at the same time. Each piece is like a puzzle, a sequence of odd rhythmic phrases. These are the first recordings made of this one-of-a-kind sound.
Three short tracks from West Kalimantan demonstrate gong rows that would normally be played as part of a large ensemble at a curing ritual. Then comes a longer circle song, sung on the night before a harvest festival as part of a shamanistic ritual. An old woman's voice leads a large ...

| | Mano Negra Patchanka CD (1992)
Okotanpekono Majo CD music
$12.79 The debut from Mano Negra is more than a band wanting to be the Clash. It's the sound of a band becoming the Clash (it compresses all the musical sprawl of Sandinista! into a single disc), then going on to find their own sound, most especially with tracks like "Indios de Barcelona" and "Mala Vida," both of which would become staples of their repertoire. "Killin' Rats" is a perfect mix of hip-hop and rock, while their take on the traditional "Rock Island Line" (the song that launched the skiffle movement of the '50s) flows through several musical styles in the course of three minutes. There's nothing that complex about it, but the best rock & roll has always been simple. But there's an undeniable fire about Patchanka -- they sound as if they've just discovered rock, and they play as if their lives depended on it, with Chao singing (probably one of the few to take Joe Strummer as a vocal model) and the rest of the band offering soccer-style chanting as a background. They're not afraid of anything, they're immortal, and they swagger -- and they're often funny, as in the over-the-top fake applause that permeates "Mano Negra," the album's opener. Not everything works -- two of the English-language tracks, "Baby You're Mine" and "Takin' It Up" (which slows the pace -- a bad idea on an album that had been merrily careening ...
