More than three years after her debut, THIS IS WHO I AM, R&B vocalist Heather Headley returned with 2006's IN MY MIND, another strong set of passionate tunes that focuses on the vicissitudes of love. A Broadway veteran and Trinidadian native, Headley incorporates little of these influences into her pleasantly straightforward style, with the exception of the dancehall-infused "Rain," featuring Shaggy. Other standout songs include the acoustic-tinged title track, the slow jam "Wait a Minute," and the shuffling "Losing You." Although Headley doesn't break much new ground here, she continues to showcase her emotive vocals in the light of solid R&B/pop tunes, making this an album that will easily appeal to fans of her earlier work.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year is a wonderful little two-song single to see out the millennium. Experience Hendrix was able to unearth these one-off studio jams and present them in their full glory. The first cut captures Jimi Hendrix and his Band of Gypsies during rehearsal for the famous New Year's Eve 1969 Fillmore concerts that would eventually become Band of Gypsies. A loose medley of "Little Drummer Boy"/"Silent Night"/"Auld Lang Syne," this track clearly illustrates the heavy chemistry between Hendrix and his co-conspirators Buddy Miles and Billy Cox. In contrast, "He Talks to Me" is a tender love ballad. This tune revolves around a love affair in its prime, not a relationship that is riddled with heartache and woe, and the affectionate lyric brings a ray of sunshine to this largely melancholy album. Although the production is a bit dated, it doesn't detract from Morgan's ability to render heartwarming country ballads or, in the case of a few tracks, good old country rockers.
