When it comes to British folk-rock, Fairport Convention's 1969 classic Liege & Lief occupies the same influential trophy case as the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, and Nirvana's Nevermind. London folk revivalists Eighteenth Day of May have studied that record well, alternating between male and female lead vocals, bending traditional pieces into pastoral folk-rock hymns and utilizing an arsenal of traditional instruments without ever sacrificing the cool strains of an electric guitar through a vintage amplifier. Like fellow new traditionalists Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, EDM evoke the countryside in all of its sunlight splendor and rainy gloom, peppering their eponymous debut with descending autoharps, bells, dulcimers, and the occasional flute solo, and for the first few songs they sound like clipper ship full of wind. The lush "Eighteen Days," "Sir Casey Jones" with its Volunteers-era Jefferson Airplane harmonies, and the rolling "Highest Tree" are mini road trips set to music, but by the time a plodding cover of Bert Jansch's "Deed I Do" appears, the record begins a slow descent into a midtempo sinkhole filled with lush but forgettable folk-pop. The members of this talented collective have obviously done their homework, and their reverence is admirable, but there is so little danger on this excruciatingly safe debut that it ultimately renders itself invisible. ~ James Christopher Monger
The Eighteenth Day Of May formed a couple years ago, appropriately on a sunny evening in the month of May. Allison Brice (a New Orleans native with a beautifully mellifluous voice), Richard Olson (a Swedish-born singer and guitarist) and Ben Phillipson (a gifted guitarist and mandolin player who has been playing folk music since his childhood in Oxford) were high on a rooftop above east London. Instead of the inward looking urban sounds of most contemporary groups they decided, there and then, to form an acoustic three-piece with a much more bucolic outlook.

Eighteenth Day Of May album
$14.89 Throw away your Godfather-conceived notions of Sicilian music if you're going to listen to French record label Ocora's Sicile: Musiques Popularies/Sicily: Folk Music, a collection of traditional music from the Mediterranean island. Sicily, which counted Normans, North Africans, Greeks, and Romans among its occupiers (all of whose influences are heard in its music) and has lagged behind the mainland in terms of economic development, manages to still continue and retain much of its folk music, even as modern styles enter into mainstream society. Recorded between 1984 and 2004 by Sergio Bonanzinga, a professor of cultural anthropology at the University of Palermo (he also compiled the very extensive and helpful liner notes included, which come in English, Italian, and French versions), the songs on the album are a good cross-section of Sicily's offerings, from tarantella to mazurka, from quadrille to waltz. Most are purely instrumentals, employing strings and winds and twisting, repetitive ...
| | Killing Joke What's This For...! CD (1981)
Eighteenth Day Of May CD music
$12.19 Socially conscious lyrics and aggressive, wardance-like songs dot WHAT'S THIS FOR...!, another essential piece in the Killing Joke puzzle. This sophomore effort finds the band experimenting more with non-traditional song-structures; employing atonality and irregular syncopation, it skillfully uses its music to supplement its message.
The album has an overall militaristic feel that Killing Joke shed in later years. Notable cuts include the drum-machine driven "Butcher," and "Follow the Leader" which owes as much to early techno as it does to punk rock--an interesting combination. WHAT'S THIS FOR...! is a crucial step in Killing Joke's evolution from anarchist punk-rockers to sophisticated, genre-busting musical propagandists.
If not quite as remarkable as the band's gripping self-titled debut, What's THIS For...! showed that Killing Joke could maintain their frenetic, doom-wracked intensity while experimenting with their already strongly established style. Jaz Coleman's vocals go through even more treatments and tweaks than before, chorus shout-alongs swathed in deep echoes, hidden behind Geordie Walker's punishing riffs and the steroid-driven rhythm section. Big Paul Ferguson in particular lays down some absolutely skull-crushing drum slams and Youth is no less intense at most parts, and often they rather than Coleman or Geordie dictate the song, as the lengthy death-groove of "Madness" makes perfectly clear. Elsewhere Geordie shows a calmer (comparatively) ...
