| John's Children Jagged Time Lapse CD (1997)
Pipeline CD music
$17.99 There have been so many legit and bootleg John's Children releases that, if you've picked up two or three of them already, it's hard to keep straight what if anything might be previously unreissued on some of the later ones. Most of Jagged Time Lapse's songs previously appeared on the Instant Action boot, for instance, and the super-rare "Midsummer Night's Scene" single has appeared on enough collections at this point that it's hard to think of it as a rarity anymore. If this happens to fit in well with the jigsaw puzzle of your John's Children purchases, though, it's a good collection of odds and ends, sometimes with markedly better sound than previous releases have boasted. The "Desdemona" and "Midsummer Night's Scene" singles are here, as are the weird Andy Ellison singles "Help," "Casbah Candy," "Been a Long Time," and "Arthur Green." As for tracks that aren't that easy to come by elsewhere, there's the chaotic instrumental "Perfumed Garden of Gulliver Smith," a not-too-different alternate version ...
| | Dengue Fever Escape From Dragon House CD (2005) Enhanced CD
Pipeline music CDs
$12.89 For their sophomore album, Dengue Fever switch away from their nearly all-covers repertoire to try something a little more bold -- writing originals while still developing their rock-music-into-Cambodian-pop-and-back-again approach. It's actually a good move in order to escape from lingering questions of "just" being a museum piece of a group. Happily the six-piece step up, introducing an interesting curveball as well with a newly professed interest in the upbeat, horn-driven Ethiopian pop/funk/rock of the '60s and '70s collected in the Ethiopiques series. Though one could cynically wonder if the band is going to end up incorporating a new retro scene per album, Dengue Fever clearly are out to entertain by whatever means, and by putting a slew of things together, create something new and unexpected. Chhon Nimol's singing is again top-notch, even slipping in a bit of hip-hop flow on "Sui Bong," while her greater fluency in English also creates more of a truly unique sound for the band. The Holtzman brothers again provide the musical core, with Ethan's work on organ providing the kind of smoky funk appropriate to the proceedings. Zac's guitar adds good crunch, but it's the strength of the overall arrangements that truly matters the most, as songs slip from bass/drum breakdowns to horn-driven explosions of joy. Standout moments include the nervous, almost early ...
| | Jon & The Nightriders Stampede! CD (1990)
Pipeline songs
$11.39 Making its CD debut some 20 years after it was originally recorded, the fourth and final album by Jon & the Nightriders continues music historian John Blair's tribute to surf music, and it would be no exaggeration to say that if all surf sounded this good, the genre would never have died. Cut with the same eye for menace that sundry contemporary Brit acts were morphing into psychobilly, but with such a good-natured slant that the resemblance is purely superficial, Stampede! is scattered across both band originals and genuine classics: "Speedway" was written in 1963 by future California Lieutenant Governor Mike Curb, "Catalina" is a King Pins cover, "Boss" is a Rumblers oldie, and everyone's in love with "Wild Weekend," Tornadoes saxophonist George White's pièce de résistance. All are chopped out with such an eye for detail, however, that you forget the album was cut in 1986. This is surf as it ought to sound, twanging and crashing with a passion for a lifestyle that seems almost impossibly utopian today. But five bonus tracks recorded across sundry Nightriders resurgences through the late '90s prove that the spirit of surf remains alive and well, and a full-scale ...
| | Killers Day & Age CD (2008)
Pipeline album
$13.05 On their third proper full-length, DAY & AGE, the Killers blend the glitzy glam of their smash debut, HOT FUSS, and the heartland rock of its follow-up, SAM'S TOWN, while throwing some stylistic curveballs along the way. Like HOT FUSS, DAY & AGE focuses on hooks and an energetic, highly polished sound. Yet it still manages to incorporate the experimental ambitions ...
