Keane - Strangers film
$13.95 The work of Paul McCartney presents a quandary to the anthologist--on one hand, it's hard to pick a period of his legendary career that didn't produce something which is now ingrained in our global consciousness. On the other, try fitting any of that onto one, two, or ten CD's and calling it "comprehensive." ALL THE BEST does a great job of narrowing down McCartney's post-Beatles hits, presenting an album of, as the name implies, some of his finest moments, both solo and with Wings.

| | Billy Idol VH1 Storytellers CD (2002)
Keane - Strangers review
$11.25 While it might seem incongruous for a rock & roll rebel like Billy Idol to perform on an ostensibly introspective songwriters show like VH1's STORYTELLERS, he pulls it off with the same adaptability that allowed him to move from punk upstart to pop star to rock veteran with such seamlessness. In all honesty, it's rather a kick to hear the familiar moody guitar intro from "White Wedding" played on acoustic guitar, especially knowing that it's longtime Idol cohort Steve Stevens doing the picking. Surprisingly, Idol's wildman bellow modulates quite well to a lower dynamic on this song and such others as "Flesh For Fantasy" and the R&B cover tune "To be a Lover." The all-acoustic format doesn't stop Idol and his stripped-down band from rocking out on "Cradle of Love" and the Generation X (his old punk band) staples like "Ready Steady Go." What's more, the STORYTELLERS setup seems tailor-made for tackling one of the aforementioned ...
| | Keane Hopes And Fears CD (2004)
Keane - Strangers DVD
$12.65 Often compared to countrymen Coldplay and Radiohead, the UK-based trio Keane plays a similarly majestic, sweeping blend of pop-informed rock music. Fueling the comparisons is the fact that lead vocalist Tom Chaplin makes heavy use of the same kind of Jeff Buckley-esque falsetto and emotion-filled wails favored by Chris Martin and Thom Yorke. On HOPES AND FEARS's epic tracks such as "She Has No Time," however, Keane takes the more dramatic elements of the aforementioned bands' sounds and magnifies them, creating piano- and synthesizer-driven cinematic soundscapes dripping with quiet heartache and existential angst. In addition, Keane incorporates minimalist trip-hop beats, which, in combination with Chaplin's strong pop melodies, evoke a male-led Portishead jamming with the Raspberries. One of the most sonically atmospheric groups of the Britpop scene, Keane ignores the notion of traditional guitar-based rock music in favor of something altogether quieter, yet equally as intense.
The English music press can never let anyone be. They're always quick to hail the next big thing and, in this case, the next big Coldplay is Keane. Lowgold briefly held that title upon its debut release in 2001, but U.K. critics rushed to give that crown to someone else just because that's what they like to do. Keane didn't ask for it, but perhaps it's the overall majestic presentation of the ...
| | Nirvana With The Lights Out CDs (2004) With DVD; Box Set; Digipak
Keane - Strangers movie DVD
$38.59 "With The Lights Out" includes a DVD as well as a large booklet with pictures and liner notes.
Ten years after the death of Kurt Cobain, Nirvana fans finally got what they had been waiting for in the form of 2004's WITH THE LIGHTS OUT, an extensive three-CD/one-DVD box set spanning the deified rock band's career. Part of Nirvana's charm was its gleefully subversive aesthetic, and this trait is heavily featured on Disc One, which begins with a slaughtered version of Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" at the group's first gig in 1987. Distortion and low fidelity reign on most of these songs (including "Anorexorcist", "Pen Cap Chew," and a demo version of "Even in His Youth"), and Cobain probably wouldn't have had it any other way.
Disc Two covers the band's uneasy transition to superstar status and features the crucial addition of drummer Dave Grohl, whose powerhouse percussion worked perfectly with Krist Novoselic's rumbling bass and Cobain's tortured vocals and fiery guitar playing. In addition to Cobain's solo acoustic tracks and demo versions of well-known songs, excellent B-sides and compilation tracks are presented here, including a gorgeous reading of the Velvet Underground's "Here She Comes Now" and a fierce take on Greg Sage's "D-7" that rivals the most intense Nirvana studio tracks. Covering the post-NEVERMIND years, Disc Three features acoustic readings of IN UTERO tunes, along ...

Keane - Strangers film
$13.85 Having won both critical and commercial acclaim for their debut album, HOPES AND FEARS, British band Keane pushes the hook-infested keyboard-rock on their sophomore effort in a darker, moodier direction. But UNDER THE IRON SEA features an intense, romantic brand of melancholy, with the trio of Tom Chaplin, Richard Hughes, and Tim Rice-Oxley vamping their way through vaulting rock melodies and power ballads, all without the aid of a single guitar.
There are plenty of deliciously ...
