The latest album from the "Tracy Chapman of Africa" provides more of what Suzanna Owiyo has become known for -- relatively light songs with guitar accompaniment and a social focus. Surprisingly, despite being renowned for her guitar abilities, Owiyo opts to use other players on guitar and focus on her vocals here. The album opens with her breakout hit from 2002 celebrating the centennial of Kisumu. As the album progresses, there are a number of songs on acoustic guitar with lingering vocal techniques abounding. The first switch from this format comes in the form of "Ngoma," a celebration of proper African music that breaks out a squadron of Luo drums to pound out a thick rhythm that isn't particularly the focus of the rest of the album. There's a bit of dancehall thrown into "Sandore" and similarly, "Suna Ka Ngeya" is transformed from a traditional song about insect-borne diseases into a house anthem. Finally, "Lek Ne Wounda" incorporates some thick dub aesthetics and a bit of rap over the top, and the album ends on a remix of "Kisumu 100" with a heavy dose of benga. In between each of these newly styled items, the sound returns to the acoustic traditional format, complete with a Tracy Chapman-esque voice to cement the parallels. The sound is very good, and the mix between old and new is rather standard fare for contemporary African releases. As such, this album breaks no new ground to speak of, but is still an enjoyable listen. ~ Adam Greenberg

Mama Africa music CDs
$13.59 Life Live? More like Life-less. After Thin Lizzy wrapped up their successful "farewell" tour, their second live album was issued. It was originally supposed to be issued during the tour, but extensive overdubbing and nitpicking pushed the album's release toward year's end, after the publicity from the tour had died down. The two-LP Life is not even close to being a worthy successor to its exceptional predecessor, 1978's classic Live and Dangerous. Instead of replicating the rough energy and spontaneity of Live and Dangerous, the overall sound of Life is reminiscent of their '80s studio albums -- polished pop gloss. An obvious reason for the album's failure is the fact that Lizzy's songwriting in the '80s was not on par with their '70s work, as evidenced by such tracks as "Angel of Death," "Thunder & Lighting" and "Renegade," among others. Older standards ("Jailbreak," "Are You Ready," "Emerald," etc.) fare ...

| | Hugo Diaz Classical Tango Argentino CD Import
Mama Africa album
$18.59 Although the label has released several albums with essentially the same title from the late Hugo Diaz and his trio, it doesn't appear that this is an obvious reworking of previously released material. With bandoneon, piano, and bass, it is indeed a very classical look at Argentinean tango, both old and new. You can hear the new in "Berlin 89" and Astor Piazzolla's "Otoņo Porteņo," which crackle with experimentation as the relatively rigid trio format sparks up against the more flexible, wider-ranging sound. Curiously -- or perhaps not -- Diaz and crew never sound completely at home there. They're more comfortable with the selection of waltzes and the melancholy of "Que Noche" that put them on firmer, more familiar ground. Musically, they're superb, with wonderful interplay ...

Mama Africa CD music
$16.45 die1 v1. to cease to be alivefast1 adj8. wanting or tending to start sexual relationships with people very soon after meeting themAccording to the four members of this Los Angeles based 4 piece, the definition of "Die Fast" is to hit people in the face as hard as possible with a baseball bat. At least such is the intended effect this band produces with its hard hitting, in your face, punk rock style. The live set list is designed to be a 25 minute massacre of pounding drum rhythms, blistering guitar riffs and grainy vocal lines. The vocal melodies range from Dead Boys inspired old school punk to grundgy Cobain-esque yells. The lyrics can be at times unexpectedly humorous adding a quirky dimension to the otherwise edgy sound. The debut EP release titled "Live Ammunition" is essentially a live album. The band tries to underline the raw spirit of its music by using only live studio takes with minimal production and no overdubbing. Ten songs were recorded all in one day of which the best six were chosen to make the EP. Not only is the live feel being recreated on this record but the band also showcases its live playing ability. The first track (appropriately named Die Fast ) kicks off with a massive, machine gun-like drum and guitar intro and pretty much sets the tone for the rest of the album. The ...
