Perhaps the Tuvan craze in world music is dying down a bit now, more removed from the flurry stirred up by Genghis Blues. There's still a fair bit out there to be heard nonetheless, with groups beyond the well-known Huun Huur Tu and Kongar-ol Ondar. Case in point is this album from Ay-Kherel, a troupe headed by Vladimir Soyan. The album progresses through the obvious khoomei to instrumental pieces and various folk songs, both in solo and ensemble formats. Much of the music is similar to what would be heard on other Tuvan albums, with some exceptions in execution. No one in this troupe is up to the same standards in throat singing as ol-Ondar, but they aren't bad. They don't have the vocal range of some of the old long-song specialists, but they aren't bad (especially Vladimir's daughter Lilya Soyan). They aren't the most virtuosic on the igil or khomuz, but they aren't bad. They're a perfectly good troupe overall, very good generalists as opposed to virtuosic specialists. As such, it makes for a nice primer to the music of Tuva, and a good lead-in for further exploration in the rich music of the locale. ~ Adam Greenberg

$15.19 bio well i started out back in the day playing the guitar at the age of 11.i took lessons from all kinds of different teachers to learn as much as i could,so i can get out and start playing in a band.i started at 15 playing in a rock band up until i was around 20.then i decided to take a break from the rock thing because i was getting tired of that type of writing. then one day i went to check out a bar that had country music and people were singing kereoke and i thought wow this is what i want to do and from that day on i was hooked on country music.from the age of 21 and on i started messing around with playing along with the radio station that played country trying to better myself in that style.i wrote around 15 songs and a bunch of ½ writen songs from 21 up until i was around 30. then i went into the recording studio to record what i had so far.i called an old band mate/friend steve roach to ask him who he knew for a good recording studio,he told me matt mercado would be a good choice(formally of mind bomb)i thought this would be a good choice, seeing he was known for writing great hits and went on tour and knew some people in the buisness.my first cd a 3 song experiment in 2004 was’nt as easy as i thought. after the completion of that first demo i showed it around to all kind of different people and got a lot of different reactions.i thought it would be all positive but to my surprise some people had some negative but contructive opinions on what i should change and what i should have the next time when i record.well that did’nt hold me down,i took what they said and turned the negative into a positive.using their critisizum for a learning tool…i thought i would do another cd but wait until i wrote more songs.after my first cd was’nt what i wanted i started writing more songs.i went from 15 songs to having 65 song within the 2 year period…the negative response from my first cd lit a fire in me,,i just kept writing song after song, the next one better the last.it was like god was handing me these songs that just kept coming,i did’nt stop to think of how or why i just took what i had and ran with it.after my onslaught of new songs have been written i thought now this is the best time for me to record a new cd.i made some phone calls and rounded up some ...
