This four-CD set contains nearly five hours of music, and while little of it is central to the output of either featured artist, all of it is worthwhile. The Glenn Miller material might seem especially peripheral, since all of it has been released elsewhere commercially, but the producers have done an excellent job with the sound, especially on the Carnegie Hall concert that forms the first half of disc two, and none of the authorized distributors have upgraded their versions of these performances (or kept them in print, for that matter) in many years. This is not only the easiest way to get that material but also one of its better presentations, with excellent fidelity throughout and a big boost in volume over the rather anemic-sounding, now-deleted RCA issue of the late '80s. The soundtrack performances from Sun Valley Serenade and Orchestra Wives are also worth hearing and also missing in action from their legitimate sources -- and the soundtrack recordings from The Glenn Miller Story, although a bit of a cheat being included here, sound wonderful, and they do feature the Miller bandmembers. The Benny Goodman sides are from the 1950s, and the centerpiece there is the 1951 broadcast benefit to aid Fletcher Henderson that preserves some of the latter's most popular arrangements in excellent form. The rest of the Goodman portion is filled out with early-'50s sides by his sextet or his band, which are always a treat on numbers like "King Porter Stomp" and others. The annotation is also extremely thorough, making this a particularly choice release for completists on either bandleader. ~ Bruce Eder
This 4-CD box set combines pieces from Glenn & Benny. The Miller set collects two soundtracks from Glenn's movies "Sun Valley Serenade" and "Orchestra Wives." Also included is the 1939 performance from Carnegie Hall featuring Goodman and Paul Whiteman, p Glenn & Benny Review

| | George Thorogood The Dirty Dozen CD (2009)
Glenn & Benny
$11.65 Personnel: George Thorogood (vocals, guitar); Jim Suhler (guitar); Buddy Leach (saxophone); Billy Blough (bass instrument); Jeff Simon (drums). After more than a decade of recording for other labels, George Thorogood & the Destroyers moved back to EMI/Capitol for the release of 2009's THE DIRTY DOZEN. Split into two sides and consisting of covers of classic blues songs, some bar band favorites, and a couple of lesser-known tracks, the album digs back into the archives to uncover some buried tracks from the '80s and '90s. What's uncanny is that apart from the tinny sound of the recordings from the late '80s/early '90s, the band and Thorogood sound exactly the same almost two decades later. George still has the same ferocious slide technique, his growling vocals have barely aged, and the band still has the feel of skilled musicians who know how to play it simple. In other words, GT & the Destroyers still rock, and if you were ever a fan, you still should be. The only real problem with this record is that as cool as it is to hear the band's 1991 take on "Six Days ...

| | Jeff Healey Mess Of Blues CD (2009)
Glenn & Benny
$12.89 Personnel: Jeff Healey (vocals, guitar); Dan Noordermeer (vocals, guitar); Alec Fraser (acoustic guitar, bass guitar); Dave Murphy (keyboards); Al Webster (drums); Holger Peterson (background vocals). While Mess of Blues may not be the last Jeff Healey recording we see, it is the one that will be accorded as his epitaph, seeing that it was issued in America a scant two months after his death just three weeks shy of his 42nd birthday. There is no ambulance chasing or grave robbing process involved here. The album is sanctioned; it was set to be issued before he passed away. Healey wrote the liner notes for this date (his first blues release in eight years!), and explained the song choices he made for it. The strange thing when considering all the different recordings he made during his short life is that Healey's career is bookended -- on tape at least -- by blistering electric blues-rock albums. ...
