Triptych
$13.59 Personnel: Houston Person (tenor saxophone); James Chirillo (guitar); John Di Martino, John Di Martino Quartet (piano); Lewis Nash (drums). Audio Mixer: Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Note Author: Sid Gribetz. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (06/23/2009). Photographer: John Abbott . Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but ...

Triptych
$12.59 Personnel: Jeff Hamilton (drums); Tamir Hendelman (piano). Audio Mixer: Steve Genewick. Liner Note Author: Diana Krall. Recording information: Capitol Studios, Hollywood, CA (02/02/2009). Jeff Hamilton's recordings have always been focused as straight-ahead and mainstream as your typical superhighway, with occasional time for rest stops, gassing up, and sleepovers. While always a good listen, Hamilton and his non-stop rotation of up-and-coming pianists and bassists never really pushed the envelope, staying the course set by ...

| | Nina Simone At The Village Gate CD (1962)
Triptych
$10.65 Personnel: Nina Simone (vocals, piano); Al Shackman (guitar); Chris White (bass); Rob Hamilton (drums). Recorded live at the Village Gate, New York, New York in 1961. Includes liner notes by Billy Vera. Personnel includes: Nina Simone (vocals); Al Shackman (guitar); Chris White (bass); Bobby Hamilton (drums). Recorded at The Village Gate, New York, New York. Nina Simone has the rare ability of really being able to dig into material and bring out unexpected meaning in familiar lyrics. On "Just in Time" from this CD reissue, she gives one the impression that if she had not been found "Just in Time," she would have committed suicide. During "He Was Too Good to Me," Simone sounds absolutely stunned about the end of a love affair. "Brown Baby" is both hopeful and defiant in its call for freedom, while "Zungo" is an African work song. Also from her 1961 trio performance at the Village Gate, Simone performs the overly serious "If He Changed My Name," the good-time gospel piece "Children Go Where I Send You," a regretful rendition of "House of the Rising Sun," and an unpredictable instrumental version of "Bye Bye Blackbird." Nina Simone, who was always in a category by herself, is heard throughout in her early prime. ~ Scott Yanow AT THE VILLAGE GATE captures the legendary Nina Simone live with her fine trio in 1961, still early in her career, at New York City's intimate Village Gate club. Simone is a musical anomaly, and her music can be very hard to categorize. She is a classically trained pianist. At times her complex piano parts ...
