Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles Little Joe Jackson is a simple down-home, married man. But he has three uncontrollable weaknesses: he loves shootin' craps, he drinks too much liquor and he's been lusting after sultry Georgia Brown, a sexy southern seductress just itchin' to get her hands on him. When he's fatally wounded in a barroom brawl, his gospel-quoting, hopelessly devoted wife Petunia prays by his bedside while Lucifer of Hell and the General of Heaven battle it out for ownership of Little Joe's soul. Musical fable about the forces of good vs. evil. A poor but devout and loving wife struggles to keep the soul of her shiftless husband out of the clutches of the devil. Vincente Minelli's first feature. Academy Award Nominations: Best Song ("Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe"). In 1940 George Balanchine directed the Vernon Duke-Lynn Root Broadway musical "Cabin in the Sky." He collaborated with Katherine Dunham on the choreography for the all-black cast. The play featured Dunham's company in the dance numbers. The choreographic style was a mix of classical ballet, modern dance, and Afro-Caribbean folkdance.
The film's cast includes: Butterfly McQueen, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Mantan Moreland, Willie Best, Ernest Whitman, Nick Stewart, Ruby Dandridge (mother of Dorothy), Oscar Polk, Kenneth Spencer, Ford Lee "Buck" Washington and John "Bubbles" Sublett.
The film is based on the hit Broadway musical.

Cabin In The Sky Movie Review Cabin In The Sky DVD Cabin in the Sky
Hollywood's first all-black film since The Green Pastures tells the vibrant fable of rascally Little Joe, torn between the love of his good wife Petunia and the wiles of good-time bad girl Georgia Brown...and caught in a tug-of-war between emissaries from the Lord and Satan. How can virtue triumph over evil? Well, as Petunia says, "Sometimes when you fight the devil, you gotta jab him with his own pitchfork."
Debuting movie director Vincente Minnelli (An American in Paris, Gigi) and stars Ethel Waters, Eddie "Rochester" Anderson, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are more than a match for the devil in this musical treasure. With a soundtrack of dazzling standards including Taking a Chance on Love and Happiness Is a Thing Called Joe, Cabin in the Sky is a joyous classic.

Cabin In The Sky review
$8.69 Personnel: Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Claude Williamson (piano); Buddy Clark (bass); Mel Lewis (drums). Recorded at United Recorders, Hollywood, California on November 17, 1959. Personnel: Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone); Johnny Hodges (alto saxophone); Claude Williamson (piano); Mel Lewis (drums). Liner Note Author: Nat Hentoff. Recording information: United Recorders, Hollywood, CA (11/17/1959). Gerry Mulligan's 1959 studio date with Johnny Hodges is one of the most satisfying sessions of his various meetings with different saxophonists for Verve, yet it was inexplicably the last to be made available on CD. With a hand-picked rhythm section consisting of pianist Claude Williamson, bassist Buddy Clark, and drummer Mel Lewis, and three originals contributed by each of the two leaders, everything gels nicely, though several tracks took more than three takes (in spite of liner note writer Nat Hentoff's assertions) ...

$15.05 The first all-black film produced by a major studio, HALLELUJAH represented the culmination of King Vidor's long-standing desire to do a project dealing with the lives of African Americans, strongly influenced by his childhood experience in Galveston, Texas. The film stars Daniel Hayes as Zeke Johnson, an impoverished young sharecropper living in South Carolina. When he and his brother Spunk (Everett McGarritty) go north to sell their cotton crop, Daniel falls for the seductive Chick (Nina Mae McKinney) without realizing she's a shill for the rigged crap game of her lover, Hot Shot (William Fountaine). Finally grasping the scam, Daniel fights with Hot Shot, but his ...

$10.29 Danny Boyle (SHALLOW GRAVE, TRANSPOTTING) directs this post-apocalyptic thriller set in London after a deadly, Ebola-like virus has swept through the city. Jim (Cillian Murphy), a bicycle messenger who was in an accident just days before the outbreak, is one of very few survivors who awakes 28 days later to a city that has been evacuated and is now utterly lifeless. He wanders the vacant streets of London feeling as if he's trapped in a never-ending hallucination. However, upon entering a church that is littered with dead bodies, he discovers that he is not alone--"the infected" are still living. They are violently sick, fast-moving, bloodthirsty zombies who travel at night in ravenous packs. Jim manages to escape "the infected" and locate a band of survivors--Selena (Naomie Harris), Hannah (Megan Burns), and Frank (Brendan Gleeson)--and they join forces searching for solutions, clinging to hope that somewhere healthy humanity thrives.
A gripping and suspenseful horror film with indie production values, ...

Cabin In The Sky DVD
$10.35 Giving an art-film aesthetic to a touching family drama, director Phil Morrison and screenwriter Angus MacLachlan present their first feature, which was shot in their hometown of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The film is set in nearby Pfafftown and Pilot Mountain, and location is itself a character in the film as long sequences of soundless photography show rows of houses, or rooms in a house, or stretches of farmland--capturing the essence of this area of the South.
Successful, cosmopolitan, and adorable Chicago couple Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz) and George (Alessandro Nivola) meet at a fancy art auction where she is working as a dealer, and they are married six months later. Madeleine is recruiting an outsider artist, and she travels to rural North Carolina to meet him. George accompanies her, as he is originally from Pfafftown, and though it has been three years since he visited home, Madeleine insists on meeting his family. When she does, she finds herself in a world totally different from her own, and sees a new side of her husband. His mother Peg (Celia Weston) and father Eugene (Scott Wilson) are quiet homebodies who aren't sure what to make of Madeleine's sophisticated career and lilting British accent. George's deadbeat brother Johnny (Ben McKenzie) never finished high school, and lives at home with his young wife Ashley (Amy Adams), who is naive and bubbly--and very pregnant. While the family's simplicity, traditional values, and religion make them suspicious of Madeleine, Ashley is the one bright-eyed spirit who ...
