Clark Terry & the Young Titans of Jazz: Dion Tucker (trombone); Derrick Hodge (bass instrument); Clark Terry, Conrad Herwig, Helen Sung, Tony Lujan, Frank Greene, Marcus Gilmore, Brad Leali, Barry Cooper . Personnel: Lakeisha Benjamin, Brad Leali (alto saxophone); Whitney Slaten, Steve Guerra (tenor saxophone); Adam Schroeder (baritone saxophone); Clark Terry, Crystal Torres, Tony Lujan, Frank Greene (trumpet); Conrad Herwig, Barry Cooper (trombone); Helen Sung (piano); Marcus Gilmore (drums). Liner Note Author: Quincy Jones. Recording information: Marihans, Bern, Switzerland (05/02/2004). Photographer: Rollo Phlecks. Clark Terry assembled an all-star group of his students, ranging from teenagers to musicians well into their forties to appear with him at the 2004 International Jazz Festival of Bern at Marihan's Jazz Club. In addition to crowd-pleasing favorites like "Flintstones Theme" and Terry's ballad "Sheeba," there are less familiar works like Frank Wess' slinky blues "Shell Game" and new contributions, such as trumpeter/bandmember Tony Lujan's swinging "Bella Blue." Terry is obviously the primary soloist and adds a vocal to "I Want a Little Girl," though his younger players are also featured. Among the musicians in the big band are trombonist Conrad Herwig, trumpeters Stjepko "Steve" Gut and Lujan, pianist Helen Sung, and alto saxophonist Brad Leali, all of whom have already recorded CDs of their own. and A second disc features interview excerpts with Terry, where he discusses his method of teaching and highlights of his career. Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden Clark Terry Live At Marihan's Songs Live At Marihan's Review

| | Vasoline Tuner Beyond Repair CD (1998)
Live At Marihan's
$10.15 Hello hello everybody, this is Billy Tsounis ,guitarist /vocalist/songwriter for the Vasoline Tuner band. This here cd ,Beyond Repair ,is the debut cd by Vasoline Tuner recorded analog style under a hallucinogenic party atmoshere with a bunch of differently tuned guitars and a band that had never played together prior to this recording. I had initially met RJ Vasquez, producer and owner of TON records when I first moved to Hollywood. We lived in the same building .I moved into an apartment which was and maybe still is inhabited by a happy little stoned ghost that I began to channel and consequently write the initial batch of Vasoline Tuner songs onto a 4 track machine.RJ heard the songs and said lets do a record. Gave a tape to my friend Chris Roy who played bass on the cd ,Pat Vasquez on drums ,met in the studio and went for it without having played together before. We interpreted the songs to each persons guess in 1 or 2 takes with an engineer that was tripping on acid salivating onto the board and requesting the song Louie Louie. So here is a brief explanation of the songs and their atmosphere."Pharmacy", a song about the necessity of aspirin and the consequences of the lack thereof ,like becoming a god, prison sex, and neighbourhood molester status."Mr Ugly" is about having a lot or a little money, living in a video game palace filled with midgets ho's and gadgets."Waiting for granny to die"- it's just about that. Inheritance, recipes and trolling the attic to sniff old dirty drawers to get transported back in time via sniff."Summer Vacation" was done with a drum machine and deals with ...

| | Orville Johnson Blueprint For The Blues CD
Live At Marihan's
$13.15 Orville Johnson's take on country blues is slathered with soul and downright funky. The man can sing with feeling and pick guitar, dobro, and mandolin with the best of them. He performs a program of obscure classic blues and compositions of his own on this CD. It's his impressionistic tribute to the blues masters that inspired him, rendered in his own unique voice that, while it retains the keening quality of the bluesmen who came before, never sounds like anyone but Orville Johnson. Essential for the country blues/acoustic blues fans. Blues Access says:Four stars. Orville Johnson's craftsmanship is a thing of simple beauty. Pretty folk and country blues guitar picking, well-designed songs and earnest, sturdy vocals. On Blueprint for the Blues (OJM 001) the Seattle-based picker covers lots of ground in an easy, homespun style. His guitar sparkles on a lovely, unplugged version of the soul classic "If You Need Me" ; he gives a nod to revered 60's folkie Fred Neil, the Rev. Gary Davis and Willie Dixon and even takes on Son House's a cappella tour de force, "Grinnin' in Your Face." Whether breathing life into his own compositions or rendering covers in his easy, fireside manner, all things are driven by his provocative but well-mannered acoustic and slide guitar work. Blues Revue says:Blueprint for the Blues, from Orville Johnson, outlines a roots music house with room for titles from the Rev. Gary Davis, Wilson Pickett and Henry Townsend, holding originals such as the Louisiana-tinged "My Sweet Octoroon" and serving Jimmy Rogers' "the Last Meal." It's an all acoustic affair with occasional accompaniment; Johnson backs his church-taught singing with good fingerpicking and imaginative slide playing. Rooster's Blues Picks says:Orville learned to sing in church. From the way he plays guitar, slide guitar, mandolin and whatever other stringed ...
