In his mesmerizing film, Werner Herzog explores the life and death of amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell, who lived unarmed among grizzlies for 13 summers. Extras include directr interview, music session, and more. Werner Herzog's persistent inquiry into the motivations of human obsession focuses this time on the self-proclaimed "kind warrior" Timothy Treadwell. A passionate wildlife preservationist and grizzly bear devotee, Treadwell lived unarmed among the grizzlies in a remote section of Alaska for 13 summers, and eventually died in a bear attack. He filmed his experiences during his final five years, and Herzog makes use of this footage in a posthumous portrait of a complex, intriguing character. A youthful blond actor turned nature lover, Treadwell is revealed over the course of the film to have been a troubled soul who found solace in the wild, and the existential questions and difficulties he faced in the world were, fascinatingly, worked out on film. Deftly interweaving Treadwell's quiet moments of nature appreciation with meandering introspection and alarmingly hostile rants, Herzog masterfully captures the enigma of the dead man. Herzog has a genuine appreciation of Treadwell's films, as well as sympathy for Treadwell's apparent unease with the world. Much of GRIZZLY MAN's complexity comes in our growing awareness of Timothy's apparent naivety, his need to see himself as a savior, and his sentimentalizing of nature. However, we are left with the impression of someone unafraid to follow his heart and go to any extreme--even death--in search of peace. In Theaters: August 12, 2005 (Limited) Grizzly Man Reviews: "[T]his is at once a beautiful nature doc and a fascinating fable about a dangerous state of mind, American innocence."
-- Sorina Diaconescu, Movieline's Hollywood Life "[A] fascinating twice over: as a courageously close-up view of Alaskan wildlife, red in tooth and claw, and as an unwittingly self-condemning portrait of the artist as a would-be Tarzan of the Bears."
-- Kevin Jackson, Sight and Sound 4 stars out of 5 -- "[An] exceptional documentary....[The film] does lend his quest a dignity it might otherwise have lacked."
-- Joanna Douglas, Uncut 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] tense and cinematic doc....Equal parts disturbing and hilarious."
-- Total Film Staff, Total Film "[A] mature and evenhanded documentary. The film poses more questions than it answers, and has a haunting afterglow..."Wall Street Journal "Herzog not only tells an incredible story but implies a dark metaphysic of the natural world that makes this film unsettlingly larger than its human subject."
-- Glenn Kenny, Premiere "[S]omething unique and unforgettable....Herzog conducts his own expedition into knowing the unknowable..."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "[A] mesmerizing work of disturbing power and unease....Herzog has bushwhacked fearlessly into one man's thorny soul."
-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "It is the rare documentary like GRIZZLY MAN, which has beauty and passion..."
-- Manohla Dargis, New York Times "[T]his documentary offers an intimate window into its subject. By using Treadwell's own words, ideas and point of view, Herzog makes audiences feel as if they are poring over a video journal of a tortured soul."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today Grizzly Man | List Price | $14.98 (You save $4.99) | | Studio | Lions Gate Home Entertainment | | Orig Year | 2005 | | DVD Encoding | Region 1 | | All Time Sales Rank | 8584 | | CD Universe Part number | 6989419 | | Catalog number | 18636 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Dec 26, 2005 | | Rating | Not Rated | | Running Time | 103 Minutes | | Additional Info | Subtitled | | Movie Details | Color; Digitally Processed; Subtitled |
Grizzly Man Movie Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Big emotions One of the best documentaries I ever saw: Strong personality of Timothy Treadwell, wonderful landscape, different opinions, beautiful animals,
very emotional moments, all in one.
As long as people exist who protect animals and nature, there is some hope
on this planet. Submitted by rocklady (Basel, Switzerland) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Deeply touching documentary! I guess some of the other reviewers have short attention spans, but this film didn't bore me at all.Its a truly tragic story of a man devoted to the study of grizzly bears, this was his lifes passion, the one thing that straigntend out his life from drug and alchohol abuse that might of ended his life years ago.To me he didn't seem as an egomaniac,he was just standing up for what he belived in,he didn't even charge a fee when he did presentations in elementary schools teaching little kids about bears, the one thing that gave him much joy.if you have any soul at all you will become teary eyed at times during this film, but some moments are kinda funny, when he's chasing the fox cub he named Ghost, who steals his favorite hat from his campsite and he chases him into the fox den.A truly tragic end to a wonderful human being. This film is recomended to all. What about the music?? Previous reviewers have certainly not been shy when describing their disappointment with the film. I also found it difficult to be sympathetic with Timothy Treadwell, and his super-inflated ego eventually did him in. But something is very striking in this film, something that has drawn me back to repeated viewings - THE MUSIC. It is hauntingly beautiful and works wonderfully in conjunction with the images playing out on the screen. And the unexpected bonus of the hour long featurette decribing the 2 day session in which the soundtrack was recorded is worth the price of the movie itself. I have watched it several times and find it fascinating that these wonderful musicians could "feel" what the director was asking them to, and it makes me appreciate it all the more. I have always admired Richard Thompson's work. but his interpretative work here has just blown me away. Any RT fan owes it to themselves to buy this movie. Disappointed I rented this movie after hearing how wonderful it was supposed to be. It was awful. It had nothing to do with the Grizzly bears and everything to do with a neurotic, troubled egomaniac who thought he was invinsible while invading the bears territory. Not worth watching. Bored Stiff I rented this movie the other night after reading the ravishing reviews. The movie was not about bears or his life's work. I was bored hearing the same people say the same details about his existance. I felt like I was watching a parody of someone who had devoted their life to studying nature.
