Personnel: Joe Lovano (tenor saxophone); Hank Jones (piano); George Mraz (double bass); Paul Motian (drums, cymbals). Liner Note Author: Ira Gitler. Bringing to mind a superb mix of Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins, I'm All for You finds forward-thinking saxophonist Joe Lovano expertly balancing heartfelt melodicism and cerebral harmonic improvisation. Easily one of Lovano's most listenable endeavors, the ballads-oriented album pulls no punches and simply allows you to sit back and enjoy a master play at his utter best. Joining him is journeyman pianist Hank Jones, who brings his urbane touch to such classic standards as "Don't ...

Recording information: Avatar Recording Studios, NY (2002). Photographer: Jimmy Katz. Arrangers: Phil Woods; Bill Goodwin. Phil Woods, the great American saxophonist, has been featured in more diverse settings than almost anyone in the history of the music. | | Mahogany Connectivity! CDs (2006)
Swinging The Blues
$10.79 This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Seven years after the initial release of Mahogany's 1999 debut, DREAM OF A MODERN DAY, the Brooklyn-based shoegazer-inspired ensemble returned with the two-disc CONNECTIVITY! album. Led by singer/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Prinz, the group deftly incorporates electronica touches into its guitar-driven sound, while nodding to dream-pop acts of the 1980s and '90s, an affinity made clear by the presence of former Cocteau Twin Robin Guthrie, who produces a handful of tracks and adds his distinctive shimmering guitar lines to one of two versions on the album of the lush, layered "Domino Ladder Beta." The second album in ten years from the Brooklyn-based Mahogany, Connectivity!, though it features a drastically different lineup than the original incarnation (only founding member Andrew Prinz remains), keeps that same lush, airy indie pop of The Dream of a Modern Day, but also expands and develops it. Post-modern lyrics about cities and abstract construction and theory swirl and repeat over the soft guitar arpeggios and smudged synthesizer chords while drums, both programmed and live, keep a steady beat. It's part indie pop, complete with the vaguely off-key keyboard squeaks, sweet harmonies, and male vocals that can sound remarkably similar to those of Belle & Sebastian's Stuart Murdoch, but it's part experimental rock, too, ignoring traditional ...
