| | Chamillitary CD (5 Customer Reviews)
Another in Chamillionaire's seemingly endless string of mixtapes, Chamilitary is also a fine loss-leader compilation of the artists signed to the rapper/producer's label of the same name. After a statement of purpose intro track that's also an excellent example of Chamillionaire's own mic skills, the album is mostly a showcase for Rasaq and 50/50 (who gets five solo tracks of his own). Both of them are solid rappers, each with a more than adequate presence and flow, but the irony of the album is that even without trying to, Chamillionaire's mixture of skills, production savvy, and charisma tends to overshadow his protégés. His solo tracks "Get Outta Here" and "Roll wit Me" are the album's highest points, the latter built on a thin, needly arrangement that enhances the starkness of the lyrics. It might be a label sampler, but Chamilitary mostly plays up the label head's talents instead of that of his signings. ~ Stewart Mason
Additional personnel: Rasaq, 50/50 Twin.

| | Chamillionaire Sound Of Revenge CD (2005) Parental Advisory
Chamillitary CD music
$13.19 With THE SOUND OF REVENGE, Chamillionaire's 2005 Universal debut, the Houston-based rapper makes the most of his major-label deal, which includes his own Chamillitary imprint. On SOR, Paul Wall's former collaborator amps up that duo's signature chopped-and-screwed mixtape sound with heavy-duty arrangements that expertly showcase Chamillionaire's deep, husky voice. The introductory title track is marked by machine-gun beats, and establishes the album's fierce, restless mood. But the disc's highlight is the utterly infectious single "Turn It Up," which boasts Scott Storch's distinctive chiming production and an appearance by Lil' Flip. Although fellow Texan Bun-B, Krayzie Bone, and others also show up, REVENGE doesn't rely on guest shots; this is Chamillionaire's show through and through, as proven by each track on this assured and potent record.
Personnel: Chamillionaire (rap vocals); Killer Mike, Krayzie Bone, Lil Wayne, Pastor Troy, Rasaq, Scarface, Lil' Flip, Natalie , Bun B (rap vocals).

| | R. Kelly - Trapped In The Closet: Chapters 1-12 DVD (2005)
Chamillitary songs
$9.69 Released on the eve of R. Kelly's court date, where he faced some serious charges and a very incriminating videotape, the first five chapters of the Closet Cycle confused, amazed, and delighted his fans. The entirety of the series, including all 12 chapters, is sure to have the same effect. Essentially an R&B soap opera, complete with the sets, lighting, convoluted plotlines, and scandalous secrets of daytime TV, TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET features its star and a cast of characters very literally acting out the actions the song describes. The plot involves numerous infidelities, a homosexual affair, a gun, and--as this is an R. Kelly piece of work--at least one steamy sex scene. The attention to detail is astounding, hilarious, and typical of Kelly, as he describes everything from the fear he experiences while hiding from his lover's husband, to the leg cramp he gets while having sex with his wife. Kelly's smooth vocals give voice to everything, even as the different characters mouth the lyrics. Though the project recalls the cheating themes of old blues songs, evokes the look of daytime drama, and contains the controlled raunchiness of vintage Kelly, it's safe to say that TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET represents a new direction in R&B, and is like nothing else audiences have ever seen before.
This 12 part tale of an adulterous encounter and more has enough twists and turns to leave fans and industry insiders alike grasping for more. Also included is B-roll and behind-the-scenes footage.

| | M C Eiht Affiliated CD (2006) Enhanced CD
Chamillitary CD music
$13.19 Containing both DVD interview and music video footage, MC Eiht's 19th album is a restatement of his roots, as well as a musical shout out to his fellow West Coast and Southern homies. The album marks the first time he's worked with a woman rapper, the formidable Jaz, whose "Gangsta Minded" is a tour de force of gritty reality. Eiht also features up-and-comer Big2 DaBoy on one of AFFILIATED's highlights, "2 Compton MF'z," a fascinating comparison of the two rappers' styles, while he spits out his anger on the accusatory "Smoke This," a diatribe against artists who refuse to deal with real life in their music.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
| | Joe Pass Portraits Of Duke Ellington CD (1974)
$9.89 Recorded just a month after Duke Ellington's death, this tribute album (reissued on CD) features guitarist Joe Pass (just beginning to become famous), bassist Ray Brown, and drummer Bobby Durham jamming on eight Ellington tunes and "Caravan" (which was penned by one of Duke's key sidemen, Juan Tizol). The interplay between the three musicians is quite impressive, and Pass' mastery of the guitar is obvious (he didn't really need the other sidemen). Highlights include "In a Mellow Tone," "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," and "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)." Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Joe Pass (arch top electric guitar), Ray Brown (acoustic bass), Bobby Durham (drums).

Both albums from this well-documented concert are excellent with the edge going toward the Decca set. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Lone Catalysts Hip Hop CD (2000) Bonus Track; Japan
$38.19 Pittsburgh-based hip-hop group Lone Catalysts present their latest album, the appropriately-titled HIP HOP.
If there was a given going into Lone Catalysts' debut for their own label, it was the expert beat-making capabilities of J. Rawls, and he did not disappoint on Hip Hop. Tight, metronomic rhythms and stark, head-nodding beats collide with an undertow of foggy, palliative jazz samples ("The Pro's," "Settle the Score," the speculative indie hit "If Hip Hop Was a Crime," and the cool "Due Process" with Kweli and Rubix), so the music goes down smoothly, but it keeps kicking once it's down. More of an unknown was J. Sands' skills on the microphone, and, if his technique wasn't particularly distinctive, the emcee made up for a vaguely prosaic rhyme style with the poise and self-assurance of his rhymes. His lyrics concentrate almost entirely on the hip-hop lifestyle, so while the dexterity of his words refused to be slept on, their self-referential nature ensured that the album would remain an underground sleeper. As the title indicates, the duo comes from the no frills, straight-to-the-essence old-school of rap, so there is nothing flashy or exceptional about Hip Hop; but it is a rock-solid first effort on which its pair of Lone Catalysts mix an obvious sense of love for the game with a laidback but perceptible prod against the staid predispositions of rap. ~ Stanton Swihart

| | Jagged Edge CD (2006)
$7.69 The fifth Jagged Edge release continues the group's commitment to a contemporary R&B sound that marries a smooth ballad style to hip-hop-inspired club beats. The lead-off track on this self-titled 2006 release, "Ghetto Guitar," is a fine example of what Jagged Edge does best: blending big beats, accessible samples, and soulful singing punctuated by close-knit harmonies. The velvety slink of "Watch You" finds Jagged Edge back in ballad mode, proving that the group hasn't lost their penchant for slow-jam crooning. "Season's Change" features guest star John Legend on piano and vocals, and is one of the album's highlights. In all, JAGGED EDGE is a slice of first-rate urban contemporary, and should please fans of the group's previous efforts.

| | Audio Eagle Presents A Compilation Of Bands From Ohio CD (2008)
$10.09 A kind of mixtape/business card from Akron-based Audio Eagle Records of 21 indie and post-punk bands hailing from all parts of Ohio, this fun set shows that rock is still alive and well in the Midwest. There's a lot to like here, including former Guided by Voices guitarist Doug Gillard's Nuggets-inflected "For What I've Done," the fascinating and goofy "Earthworms in the Sun" by Coffinberry, the north Mississippi-sounding "Nobody But You" by the Black Keys (Black Keys member Patrick Carney is actually the founder of Audio Eagle), and the lovely "Stolen Moments" by Six Parts Seven. There's hardly a slack moment, and Ohio should be proud of these wonderful bands. ~ Steve Leggett
