Originally released as three separate albums, FACE THE MUSIC, A NEW WORLD RECORD and DISCOVERY.
This three-disc set collects three of ELO's classic late-'70s albums in their entirety, and as such, it's an excellent overview not only of Jeff Lynne's musical genius, but of commercial '70s pop as a whole. 1975's FACE THE MUSIC, 1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD, and 1979's DISCOVERY--1977's double-disc OUT OF THE BLUE is omitted for space--are as good as Top-40 pop got in the last half of the '70s, and hearing the three together sketches out the arc of Lynne's career. FACE THE MUSIC, ELO's fifth album, is slightly rough-edged, but its enormous hit singles paved the way for the staggeringly good A NEW WORLD RECORD, Lynne's best and most consistent work. After the overwhelming commercial success of OUT OF THE BLUE, DISCOVERY is a bit more self-consciously experimental, with new-wavish Vocoders and disco beats coloring the typically excellent songs. All three are simply essential.

Detroit has produced more than its share of great music: from jazz stars like Hank, Thad & Elvin Jones; to the Motown stable of vocal artists, and legendary rhythm players Benny Benjamin and James Jamerson. Not to mention a whole lot of hard funk and primal metal, everyone from Funkadelic and Ted Nugent, to Iggy & The Stooges and the MC5--hard driving, rugged rock and roll. Put it all together with a touch of pop, and a lot of soul, and you've got Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band.
It's easy to divine Seger's influence on the music of Bruce Springsteen, and draw parallels with the vocal style of Van Morrison. The epic themes of Seger's characters on "Night Moves" certainly parallel those of the folk heroes who populate Springsteen songs (though he began developing his menagerie a good decade before the Boss). The chant-like, testifying cadences of Seger's blowtorch voice, and his predilection for gospelish motifs, puts one in mind of the mighty Celt's visionary ...

DARK SIDE OF THE MOON was a benchmark record. It turned the musical world on its ear with a hitherto unseen combination of sounds, and changed things considerably for Pink Floyd. For this project, Pink Floyd resurrected older and unfinished numbers, some of which came from the multitude of soundtracks the band members had previously worked on. The film ZABRISKIE POINT, a study of American materialism from a foreigner's perspective, provided "Us and Them" (originally titled "The Violence Sequence"). The Electric Light Orchestra was in a precarious position by 1981. Not only was Jeff Lynne's brand of immaculately produced Beatlesque pop out of critical fashion in those new-wave days, there was a new brand of video-friendly bubblegum on the rise that made such classic radio hits as "Sweet Talkin' Woman" sound passT.
