Robert Townsend's film follows the rise and fall of an R&B group in the 60s. Extras include deleted scenes, featurettes, director profile, and Easter eggs. Actor-director Robert Townsend came to fame depicting the pitfalls of the Hollywood experience for black actors with his 1987 film HOLLYWOOD SHUFFLE. Four years later, he took on the mid-'60s music scene with THE FIVE HEARTBEATS. After doing extensive research with long-lived pop/R&B group the Dells, he painted a cinematic scene of five young friends in the 60s who share the dream of making music. They journey together through three decades, experiencing all the ups and downs show business had to offer, intensified by the difficulties faces by black acts in the era of civil-rights protest. Interacting as everything from a close-knit musical family to occasional bitter rivals, the fictional Five Heartbeats experience both success and tragedy in this excellent film. The multi-talented Townshend functions as both director and star, alongside compelling performances by a cast that includes Leon and Diahann Caroll. Featuring a mix of original songs and classic Motown material, THE FIVE HEARTBEATS is an irresistible combination of music and drama that captures a unique period in American cultural history. Theatrical release date: March 29, 1991.
Filmed entirely on location in Southern California.
The film introduces thirteen original songs and features performances of numerous Motown favorites. Also featured are two R&B classics by The Dells, "Stay in My Corner" and "Oh What A Night." Townsend did research for his fictional R&B group by hanging out and travelling with The Dells, an R&B group that has been together for 38 years. The Dells acted as techincal advisors on the film.
THE FIVE HEARTBEATS is "dedicated in loving memory of John Sherrod." Five Heartbeats Reviews: "...Fundamental sweetness and sincerity....[In cameo, Harold Nicholas's] very presence expands the range of this film..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...Musically, THE FIVE HEARTBEATS is on target all the way. It's hard to remember a recent film that had so many warm-hearted, rousing, big-souled song numbers..."

$10.05 Musically oriented filmmaker Allan Arkush directs this fine biopic which tracks the legendary career of The Temptations. One of R&B's most influential, revered bands, the five men enjoyed overnight success and helped define the Motown period. Like many other success stories, though, this one has a dark side -- with self-destructive impulses and personal problems threatening to destroy the band's reign. In addition to capturing the drama of the group's rise and fall, THE TEMPTATIONS features eight of the classic songs which made them legendary, including "My Girl," "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone," and "Get Ready."

| | Madness Trilogy: Reefer Madness/Cocaine Fiends/Sex Madness DVD (1936)
Five Heartbeats movie DVD
$8.65 A trio exploitation films films from the thirties that were ostensibly made to warn young people of the perils of drugs and sex. It's hard to believe that anyone took these films seriously as educational, and it is more than likely that anyone who went to see them then enjoyed the sordid subject matter and the unbelievably ham-handed manner in which those subjects are handled more than anything else. Today, they are as entertaining as ever, as well as landmarks in 20th century American propaganda films. Contains REEFER MADNESS, COCAINE FIELDS, and SEX MADNESS. See individual titles for details. A percentage of profits from sales will be donated to the Association for Drug Rehabilitation.

| | Golden Door DVD (2007) Widescreen; Subtitled
Five Heartbeats DVD
$15.05 Set in 1913, GOLDEN DOOR begins in a treacherous, barren, and rocky area of the Sicilian countryside. On advice from a stranger, a widowed father named Salvatore Mancuso (Vincenzo Amato) decides to make the difficult voyage to America with his two sons (one of whom is deaf and mute) and his stubborn, highly superstitious mother, Fortunata (Aurora Quattrocchi). Just before boarding the boat, they meet Lucy (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a mysterious and refined British woman who pretends to be with the Mancuso family while their pictures are being taken. During their journey, Lucy tells Salvatore she needs to find a man to marry before arriving in New York. The reasons are never fully explained, but Salvatore is attracted to her, and so he agrees. After arriving at Ellis Island, the family must endure the long battery of tests that are part of the standard entrance procedure.
The plot of GOLDEN DOOR is simple, but the film is not, thanks to interesting stylistic choices. What differentiates GOLDEN DOOR from other films of its genre are the surrealist, imaginative avenues it takes most unexpectedly. Amid a sea of authentic costumes and realistic sets, director Emanuele Crialese places playful scenes of stunning beauty. This gives the film an open feel and an optimism one would never expect from the opening sequence, which is bleak, to say the least. As the characters travel to America, their minds open up to a new way of seeing. The experience of the journey is presented as difficult, but never horrific, and the strength of the characters is in their ability to remain dignified, even under potentially humiliating scenarios.
