Although Ashlee Simpson had to deal with the Saturday NIGHT LIVE lip-synching debacle that followed the release of her successful debut, she still managed to escape the shadow of her older sister, Jessica, and emerged as a popular performer in her own right. On 2005's I AM ME, Simpson clearly revels in her independence and renewed confidence, moving forward with an energetic set of guitar-heavy pop/rock tunes. Though her music still falls into the vein of Avril Lavigne and Hilary Duff, the dense, layered production of multi-instrumentalist John Shanks helps to distinguish the tunes here, which he co-penned along with Simpson. Given assured tracks such as the immediately catchy "In Another Life" and the New Wave-tinged "Dancing Alone," I AM ME is a worthy successor to Simpson's first album and bodes well for the young singer's future.
UK pressing features two bonus tracks, 'Kicking And Screaming' and 'Fall in Love with Me'. This is Ashlee's sophomore album and the follow-up to Autobiography. Features the lead-off single 'Boyfriend'. 13 tracks in total. Universal. 2005. I Am Me Review

Not surprisingly, there are a few changes in the six-year interim between Soulhat's last album and this one. Most obviously, co-founder, singer/songwriter Bill Cassis has departed, replaced by Mac McNabb who doesn't contribute tunes or vocals. That leaves the songwriting onus almost entirely on Kevin McKinney, who although capable, tends to arrange all the tracks with a similar, slightly funky, midtempo bounce, and he's now the only singer. The band's predominantly acoustic style incorporates touches of blues, country, rock, funk, pop, folk, and even reggae in a congenial, bubbly, often contagious mix. When the lyrics jump out as they do on the hot-dog, double-time, bluegrass-propelled, basketball double entendre "WNBA" ("she's got a lovely little lay-up"), the energy and unbridled enthusiasm that has kept the Texas band a big club draw during the '90s is evident. The Opalio brothers are back, again on the Important label, again with a weird and pretentious album title (a previous effort was called Cosmic Light of the Third Millennium), and again with a bunch of weird noise that was all recorded live and is mostly more likely to puzzle than to fascinate the average listener. But then, fascinating the average listener is clearly not what My Cat Is an Alien are all about. They're about noise. But not hideous, abrasive noise -- more like echoey, glittery, spacy noise. The press release describes this music, inaccurately, as "the Cosmic Blues of the III Millennium which penetrates into the soul, leaving indelible signs." In fact, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the blues, cosmic or terrestrial, and its ability to penetrate one's soul will likely depend to a great degree on whether the path into one's soul has been cleared by large amounts of hydroponic. ...
