| | Yasmin Levy Mano Suave CD (2007)
Polyphonies CD music
$13.49 Yasmin Levy has proved herself to be the leading exponent of Ladino song (Ladino is the language of the Sephardic Jews whose roots are in Spain). However, her previous albums have never quite captured her potential. This time, though, she's hit the spot, finding both the intensity of performance and delicacy of arrangement that's been her hallmark. The style is a mix of influences that blend perfectly -- listen carefully and you can hear traces of flamenco nestled alongside Middle Eastern music, with influences from around the Mediterranean liberally scattered across the sound. Her voice is in glorious form, with a depth of purity that illustrates just how she's matured and fully grown into her ability. Her own band, now well bedded-in, is superb and sympathetic, but there are some surprising additions (Paraguayan harp, anyone?). Natacha Atlas weighs in for a duet on the title cut, which becomes a gentle contest between the two singers, both ...
| | Tomita - Snowflakes Are Dancing CD (1974)
Polyphonies music CDs
$8.99 The music of Claude Debussy, with its exotic color and quirky harmonies is well suited to performance on any number of different instruments. Japanese synthesizer wizard Tomita realized that the moog synthesizer, with its almost limitless palette of colors and sounds, would be ideal for Debussy's music. "Snowflakes Are Dancing" is Tomita's electronic vision of Debussy.
The moog synthesizer creates sounds that defy description. The synthesizer also has the ability to recreate the sounds of such traditional instruments as the harpsichord, organ, trumpet and strings. The synthesizer can mimic sound of the human voice. Tomita draws on all of these possibilities in his presentation of Debussy's music. Debussy favorites such as "Clair de lune" and "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" take on a new life in Tomita's treatment. For example, the sound of the ocean, punctuated by the cries of seagulls provides the ideal stage for Tomita's treatment of "The Engulfed Cathedral." Tomita's eccentricity will keep listeners on their toes and the crystal clear sound quality ...

| | Balfa Brothers Play Traditional Cajun Music: Vols. 1 & 2 CD (1987)
Polyphonies CD music
$13.59 Originally released on Swallow (6011) in 1965 and Swallow (6019) in 1974. Includes French and English translations.
If you want to go straight to the source and hear real Cajun music without any hint of crossover, look to the Balfa Brothers. Though they were a popular live attraction as early as 1948, Dewey, Will, Burke, Harry, and Rodney (with assistance from family friend Hadley Fontenot on accordion) didn't record their first LP until 1965. Their second followed a full nine years later. Both are included on this seminal Cajun disc, and the purity of the group's performances is stunning.
Theirs is an entirely acoustic sound, based on the jangling rhythm of the guitar, the sprightly tinkling of the triangle, and two wailing fiddles, alternately melancholy and joyous. Dewey Balfa, the band's de facto leader is possessed of a classic Cajun vocal style; it's frequently impossible to ...

| | Ricky Skaggs Uncle Pen CD (2002)
Polyphonies songs
$9.25 Uncle Pen is in many ways a tribute album done by Ricky Skaggs for Bill Monroe, the man known as the father of bluegrass music. Monroe invented the style and name in the '40s. There are ten tracks on this 2002 release, including three that were written by Monroe: "Can't You Hear Me Callin'," "Wheel Hoss," and the title track, "Uncle Pen," a real toe-tapping bluegrass ride. In fact, all of the tunes on this offering are bluegrass numbers. The songs were actually recorded by Skaggs in the '80s, and have only now been combined into one album by Music Mill. Multi-instrumentalist Ricky Skaggs might be a country singer, but he has deep bluegrass ...
