Closed Captioned; Standard Screen; Soundtrack English With tracks from their debut album as well as from their follow-up, YOU COULD HAVE IT SO MUCH BETTER, this release offers the inundation of Franz Ferdinand that fans are looking for. The fashionable Scottish foursome are featured performing live in Brixton and San Francisco, with multiple versions of songs that demonstrate the band's musical progression from catchy British post-punk to a sound that incorporates a wide range of influences. Franz Ferdinand Reviews: "Captured making their US debut in New York's cramped Pianos, they look assured and confident. But it's the Brixton show that captures Franz as consummate showmen..."-- Louis Pattison, Uncut 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] sweaty, unselfconscious crowd-pleasing party atmosphere."

Franz Ferdinand film
$5.59 STRANGE TIMES includes Peel Session tracks recorded for the BBC.
As the Chameleons' most fully realized album, STRANGE TIMES deftly combines the urgency of SCRIPT OF THE BRIDGE with the atmosphere of WHAT DOES ANYTHING MEAN? BASICALLY. Beginning with the aggressive, riff-heavy "Mad Jack," this 1986 record careens through a wide range of moods, evoking sadness (the spare, poignant "Tears"), existential malaise (the mini-epic "Souls in Isolation"), and pleasant nostalgia (the upbeat ode to youth "Childhood").
Most notably, STRANGE TIMES includes the U.K. post-punk band's signature tune, "Swamp Thing," which fascinatingly unwinds from dark, synth-laden lines into a majestic anthem gilded by the shimmering guitar work of Reg Smithies and Dave Fielding. The ensemble, rounded out by vocalist/bassist Mark "Birdy" Burgess and drummer John Lever, was in complete synch here and seemingly poised for a commercial breakthrough, making its sudden dissolution (following the death of their beloved manager, Tony Fletcher) even more unfortunate. Although the Chameleons would reunite in the new millennium, nothing would top this outstanding album, which stands as one of the great overlooked records of mid-'80s British rock. (Note: Most versions of STRANGE TIMES feature five bonus tracks, including an excellent cover of the Beatles' "Tomorrow Never Knows.")
The Chameleons UK: Birdy (vocals, bass); Dave (guitar, strings); Reg (guitar); John (drums, percussion).

| | Tears For Fears Seeds Of Love CD (1989) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Franz Ferdinand review
$12.59 This remastered version of THE SEEDS OF LOVE includes bonus tracks.
Additional personnel includes: Oleta Adams (vocals, piano); Tessa Niles (vocals); Robbie McIntosh, Neil Taylor (guitar); Kate St. John (oboe, saxophone); Peter Hope Evans (harmonica); Jon Hassel (trumpet); Nicky Holland (piano, Kurtzweil Strings, background vocals); Simon Clark (Hammond organ, synthesizer); Ian Stanley (Hammond organ); Pino Palladino (bass); Manu Katche, Phil Collins, Chris Hughes (drums); Carol Steele (percussion); Maggie Ryder, Dolette McDonald, Carole Kenyon (background vocals).
Digitally remastered by Jon Astley and Chris Hughes (Close To The Edge).
THE SEEDS OF LOVE completes a trilogy familiar to many careers: the tentative debut, the fully realized follow-up, and the grandiose third album. Four years in the making, it bears all the scars of struggle and indecision and is a fascinating account of a band torn between taking shelter in an MOR cocoon and fighting the zeitgeist that threatens to consign the band to the past.
"Badman's Song" opts for safety, reveling in a sophisticated lethargy. "Sowing the Seeds Of Love" is an unashamed Beatles pastiche that predates Oasis' "All Over the World" by almost a decade, and the solemn "Woman in Chains" features Phil Collins whilst also introducing Oleta Adams. "Year of the Knife" is perhaps the focal point of the tension. Its admirable flamboyance makes for more fun than could be expected from a half-live, three-part, seven-minute swaggering rock & roll track packed with guitar solos. Each track is a five-minute-plus mini-drama with moments of delicacy and discomfort, restraint and excess, inspiration and creative exhaustion. As the last album to feature Curt Smith, it is a fitting end to an era. The 1998 remastered edition includes four bonus tracks.
Tears for Fears' third album was their third -- and, in many ways, their most impressive -- pop masterpiece in a row, which was lucky, because it had a production history that made th
| | Led Zeppelin - DVD DVDs (2003)
Franz Ferdinand DVD
$22.75 Very few Led Zeppelin performances were caught on camera during the band's life-span, but the footage that has been preserved for posterity is collected on this release. With a running time of over five-and-a-half hours, this is the definitive word on Zep's global stage-straddling performances. The footage is taken from London's Royal Albert Hall in January 1970, London's Earls Court in May 1975, Knebworth in August 1979, and Madison Square Garden in July 1973. Guitarist Jimmy Page has taken great care to restore, remix, and remaster the sound from these shows, providing a visual and sonic assault that offers indisputable proof of Led Zeppelin's reputation as a rock & roll behemoth. Additional footage comes in the shape of several television interviews, a bootleg shot of the band performing "Heartbreaker," behind the scenes footage from Knebworth, and a whole lot more.

Franz Ferdinand movie DVD
$9.25 The centerpiece is "Take Me Out" (a U.K. top ten hit), which plays out a series of come-ons between rival assassins, over what begins as a sneering slice of mid-1990s Britpop, only to morph into a funky dance-floor tune. Kapranos is often quoted as saying that the band was started in order to "make music that girls can dance to," but this unusually assured debut is quite likely to affect discriminating boys in exactly the same way.
On their self-titled debut, Glasgow foursome Franz Ferdinand lift the jagged, danceable sounds of British post-punk to elegant and dizzying new heights. While they may seem to have much in common with the wave of American bands emerging in the early 2000s, Franz Ferdinand demonstrates a close study of the genre and proves its prowess. If the Rapture is a rowdy kegger in a Brooklyn loft, then Franz Ferdinand is a gin-soaked dance-off at an outdoor European cafe where no table remains untipped. As disciples of the Fire Engines, Josef K, and Orange Juice, chief songwriters Alex Kapranos and Nicholas McCarthy temper the edges with a sense of melody that wisely falls just shy of Blondie-style bubble gum.
Rock/Pop/Post-Punk Band From The U.K.
Franz Ferdinand: Alexander Kapranos (vocals, guitar); Nicholas McCarthy (guitar, keyboards, background vocals); Robert Hardy (bass); Paul Thomson (drums, background vocals).
| | Eric Clapton Me And Mr. Johnson CD (2004)
Franz Ferdinand video
$13.29 Eric Clapton and the blues have been inextricably linked dating back to his mid-1960s stint as a string-bending phenomenon in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. A decade after the release of his blues homage FROM THE CRADLE, Clapton's ME AND MR. JOHNSON pays tribute to his hero Robert Johnson. Rounding up a stellar backing crew, including Andy Fairweather-Low and Jerry Portnoy (both of whom appeared on CRADLE), Slowhand approaches the Johnson canon with a relaxed and confident touch.
Applying liberal amounts of slide and fuzz guitar, this English rock legend saunters along fare such as "Traveling Riverside Blues" and "Love in Vain," time-honored Johnson classics better known through renditions by Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, respectively. Portnoy's unobtrusive harp provides subtle accompaniment to Clapton's heartfelt playing, be it the swirling dirge "Hell Hound on My Trail" or the harmony-soaked "Come on in My Kitchen." The proceedings are also enhanced by the Hammond organ and piano work of sideman Billy Preston, whose trips up and down the eighty-eights give added punch to songs like the rollicking "32-20 Blues" and the barrelhouse "They're Red Hot."
Sings Songs Of Robert Johnson.
Liner Note Author: Eric Clapton.
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); Andy Fairweather-Low, Doyle Bramhall II (guitar); Jerry Portnoy (harmonica); Billy Preston (keyboards); Nathan East (bass); Steve Gadd (drums).
Audio Mixer: Mick Guzauski.

| | Dream Theater - Live at Budokan DVDs (2004)
Franz Ferdinand film
$18.95 This 2-DVD set features a concert taped on April 26, 2004, at the famed Budokan in Tokyo, Japan. Disc One is the complete live concert. Disc two is packed with special features including a Japanese tour documentary, guitar/keyboard/drum solos, the tour opening video and a multiangle version of "Instrumedley."
Heavy metal rockers Dream Theater are a high-energy, progressive outfit whose music is characterized by the virtuoso guitar work of member John Petrucci, and the consistently innovative, quality records they produce. They are most recognized, however, for their live performances; Dream Theater have become one of the most bootlegged bands around, and this release truly demonstrates why. Recorded at Tokyo's Budokan in 2004, the live show features an energetic, raw performance of their music that is by turns intense, beautiful, and aggressive; also included are band interviews and backstage footage. The set list includes: "Pull Me Under," "Trial of Tears," "Solitary Shell," "Disappear," and "In the Name of God," among many others.
| | Tan Dun - The Map DVD (2004)
Franz Ferdinand review
$19.09 Composer Tan Dun's THE MAP is an ambitious project which draws on his discovery of music from the far-flung corners of the globe. The majority of his discoveries were unearthed in China's Western Hunan region, where the talented musician captured a number of field recordings on camera. Using these recordings as a basis for a concerto, Tan Dun subsequently split the music he heard into 10 movements, named them THE MAP, and reconfigured them with the help of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Performances at the Boston Symphony Hall and New York's Carnegie Hall followed in early 2003. Then, in late 2003, Dun took the project to its logical conclusion by bringing it to the Northern Gate of Fenghuang Ancient Town for a performance aided by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. This release features the concert in its entirety, as well as a fascinating documentary which charters the origins of the piece.
